What do paramedics and builders/renovators have in common?
They recognize that homes can either support or hinder aging in place.
East Dalhousie, Nova Scotia, is a great community to retire in, and when you get here, you won't want to leave! So, we designed The Forest House with a lot of consideration for the changes in mobility and function that often occur as we age.
For example:
-Toilets are in very close proximity to both exterior doors and the master bedroom. If you know, you know!
-All doorways have a 36" opening, the standard for accessibility.
-There are no stairs or transitions inside, preventing slips and falls.
-There are only two steps to the front door, which could easily and cheaply be converted to a ramp if the time came. In fact, the whole house could be tailored to suit a wheelchair user without breaking the bank.
-The open concept and spacious rooms allow a stretcher to easily be moved throughout the entire building.
-The plethora of electrical plugs in each bedroom could support a mechanical hospital bed and various medical devices, without having to sacrifice a reading light.
-The new, quality building materials and modest design should require minimal and inexpensive maintenance. If you can no longer perform your own upkeep, it shouldn't be expensive or difficult to hire someone local to help out. Don't forget the 8-year defect warranty!
-All interior doors are pocket doors. If someone falls behind a closed door, they can still be reached. This element also supports maneuverability.
-There is both a bath/shower combo and a standalone shower. Can't tolerate standing for long? Hop in the bath. Feeling a little too stiff to climb into the bath or worried you might not be able to get back out? Hop in the shower.
Bonus: Prioritizing safety and simplicity doesn't detract from this home's potential for hosting - we think it enhances it! We all know the real party happens in the kitchen (and someone can still keep an eye on the grandkids).
