Finished up turning this grass into some beds for growing food and flowers in Cumberland.

In true permaculture fashion I managed to make a fence out of nearly all scrap materials the client had on the property plus some repurposed fishing nets to keep out a mischievous puppy.

A new food forest is born.

The design for this food haven was based on trying to create a south facing U shaped microclimate. The map is phase 1 and is focused on getting the structure of the food forest to take shape. Once that's completed it's more of an on the ground process to fill the gaps with shrubs, berries, herbs, nitrogen fibers and nutrient accumulators.

Been a fun project to work on with some good people. Look forward to seeing how it takes shape.

A before and after of a longer term permaculture project.

Before I started on this there was rhubarb, an overgrown blackberry bush, an unhealthy apple and cherry tree and a large Rowan tree.

Now we have another apple, 2 pears, 2 plums, peach, 2 mulberry, 3 hazelnut, 2 elderberry, 2 fig, 3 kiwi, 2 grape, 2 hops, 1 walnut numerous: jostaberry, blueberry, loganberry, raspberry, gooseberry, loads of pollinator, ground covering and nitrogen fixing herbs and flowers everywhere, enough annual veg to not have to buy groceries all summer and 4 feisty chickens!

This is the type of project I'm most interested in. Creating a wild garden that benefits the owners and the wildlife. Not manicured and lifeless. A garden that will develop over time into more abundance and a healthier ecosystem.

And I'd love to help others have a similar space so if this sound up your street get in touch 🤙

Update from another consultation. Alison wanted to turn this patch of unused grass into a food growing zone.

We marked out the contours which ended up looking a lot like a wifi symbol. Then we dug some small swale/paths to provide contrast between the beds. I recommended how to finish building the beds using cardboard as a w**d suppressor and left them to it.

Just got the finished photo sent through now they've finished the beds. Now to plant garlic and blueberries and a few winter greens and then prep the bed ready for next spring.

Great work guys 👍

"I'd like less grass to maintain and more food and colour in my garden"

It's always a good start when you hear this. Ruth had a few landscapers previously suggest terracing and building a retaining wall on this slope which would be $$$

We chatted through some designs and settled with some on contour beds to work with the landscape rather than change it to our needs. I marked out the beds and shaped the paths, and left Ruth and some helpers to do the rest. We're now working on creating a planting list of perennial flowers, berries, fruit trees and vegetables to plant this fall.

Built this giant raised bed for some lovely folks out in Merville. They wanted a system that would reduce water usage but also a slightly adapted garden due to a mobility issue. The solution was this hugelkultur raised bed.

The hugelkutlur design helps act like a sponge under the soil while also providing lots of food for the soil.

They've been growing tons of food in it all summer

Had a consultation a few weeks ago for a lovely couple in Courtenay. They wanted to turn this area into a place to grow vegetables and berries. The area was on a slope so I marked out some on contoured beds and gave them instructions on how to make the beds and left them to it.

They just sent through the updated pic now they've added soil and mulch and started planting garlic and getting some perennials ready to plant this fall. Good work guys 👍
