What does NFPA 13 actually say about air vents in wet pipe sprinkler systems?

During site walks and drawing reviews, there is often confusion surrounding the exact rules for venting trapped air.

As shown in this technical breakdown, NFPA 13 (§8.1.5) establishes a clear mandate: A single air vent must be provided on each wet pipe system utilizing metallic pipe.

Here are the key technical takeaways for project teams and inspectors:

◆ The Requirement (§8.1.5): Only a single air vent is mandated per system. Venting from multiple points is not required by code, though designers can opt for more if the layout is complex.

◆ The Ex*****on (§16.7): The vent must be located near a high point of the system. It can be a manual valve (minimum 1/2 in.), an automatic air vent (like the AGF assembly shown here), or a remote inspector's test valve.

◆ The Practical Purpose (A.16.7): To reduce trapped oxygen that drives corrosion and MIC by venting air from a single location each time the system is filled. Removing all air is neither the intent nor practical.

◆ Accessibility Rules: Manual vents should be accessible, preferably not over 7 ft. Automatic vents are exempt from that, but its recommended to place them over areas without ceilings, above lay-in ceilings, or above access panels.

Designing a compliant fire protection network requires balancing strict code lines with operational accessibility.

How does your team handle the placement of air vents on high-point branch lines to ensure long-term corrosion protection?
