Trying h**p mulch for the dahlias this year. I wanted to source something from Ontario and ended up ordering from https://fancyfarmerettes.ca

My job this weekend is to add fish fertilizer and mulch all the dahlia beds. Then I'll make sure I've used flagging tape to label the variety just in case the original tag goes missing.

Hi again. I had a couple of local people reach out because they would like to still see photos of the flowers this upcoming season and they aren't joining Bluesky. That's totally fair.

For anyone interested, I'm going to share photos/tidbits in a weekly newsletter of sorts via my Google site - the link is in my bio. Or, feel free to email me (see post photo) and I'll send you a link to my weekly "newsletter" once the season gets going.

I honestly joined IG to meet other dahlia growers and post photos as a diary of sorts for myself, but it became something else and doesn't feel the same anymore. That's it.

Thanks again everyone!

I wish all the lovely small business owners and dahlia growers all the best! It was a pleasure "meeting" you. Thank you for feeding my dahlia addiction over the years and sharing your beautiful craft. ❤️

I don't remember what I did before dahlias to get me through the winter months, but I know that this helps.

Yes, I've already started taking cuttings - these are a few of the ones I've started so far. Honestly, I usually have decent success over-wintering most tubers, but some of the unicorn dahlias have more finicky tubers, so I want to have these cuttings as backups just in case.

I'm just using a high quality potting medium to pot up the tubers - mushroom containers are my favourite for this.

I am trying not to overthink anything and just use what I have. So far, so good. I'll keep sharing my progress, including some videos with my face soon for anyone interested.

Just wanted to share how I gave away flowers directly in the community last year on a couple of occasions.

This bucket of flowers is basically roadside (we live on a pretty quiet street), at the end of our property. Hopefully you can see the bungee cords being used to support the lip of the small bucket, so that I could shimmy the bucket around the tree trunk as needed, to avoid the sun. I like this method because I wasn't hurting the tree and the flowers could stay in water while also being protected by the shade of the maple leaves.

I've decided that if I give away flowers, it has to be simple and quick. In past years, I've wrapped flowers nicely with instructions of how to care for them, only to find some of them still sitting out at the end of the driveway an hour or two later.

So, from now on, I'll do this bucket around the tree thing. I just put a few dahlias together with an elastic and pop them into a bucket of water, walk away, and hope they get taken. On this occasion in the photos, it took less than an hour for all the flowers to be taken, so I feel that was a success.

And if people take the flowers and don't immediately care for them by placing them in water at home, etc., I don't worry about it. I just hope the flowers bring joy or whatever the person needs in that exact moment when they grab a bunch.
