From Winter Nightmares to Heartwarming Memories:
Elizabeth's Story 🌨️
This past Thanksgiving, CanWest Mechanical launched a community initiative inviting stories of "Holiday Nightmares"—those unforgettable moments when plumbing or heating emergencies became lasting memories. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce our winner, Elizabeth S., and share her incredible story that warmed our hearts.
“I grew up in Carmanville, Newfoundland, where every winter storm meant power outages and losing heat in our home,” Elizabeth recalls. “It was challenging, but my family turned it into something special. We’d gather around the pellet stove in the main room, wrapped in blankets, playing cards, and telling stories. Grandma always kept the house stocked with home preserves and freshly baked treats, and our door was always open to neighbors in need.”
Elizabeth shared how her grandmother’s warm heart and open door became a beacon for the community during those harsh winters. She fondly remembers people stopping by for hot coffee, warm food, and the comfort of connection—a tradition she’s carried with her across Canada.
Later in life, Elizabeth moved to Inuvik, where she found herself in similarly bitter winters. “The cold reminded me of Newfoundland, but it also reminded me of how it brought people closer,” she says. Whether in Inuvik, or later in Kelowna and Nanaimo, Elizabeth’s philosophy has remained the same: “Even when the heat goes out, you can always warm the world with kindness, generosity, and a smile.”
Her story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes what feels like a nightmare can become an opportunity to create memories, offer kindness, and grow closer to those around us.
