Another project completed by METZLER contracting.

For this backyard, we installed a combination of black steel fencing and a custom horizontal wood privacy fence, creating a clean, cohesive look while serving two very different purposes.

The black steel fencing provides a sleek, low-maintenance barrier around the pool area, while the horizontal wood fence adds privacy, separation, and warmth throughout the backyard.

The secret to a healthy lawn isn’t the sod, it’s what’s underneath it.

A common misconception is that new sod can simply be rolled out over existing ground. While it may look green immediately, the long-term success of your lawn depends almost entirely on proper soil preparation.

Before any sod is installed, we always add 2–4 inches of quality screened topsoil. This creates the ideal growing environment for the new roots to establish quickly.

Why is topsoil so important?

- Root Development - Fresh sod needs loose, nutrient-rich soil for roots to grow into. Compacted clay or poor soil can slow rooting and leave your lawn vulnerable to drought and disease.

Moisture Management – Good topsoil holds enough moisture to keep roots hydrated while still allowing excess water to drain away. This encourages deeper, stronger root systems.

A Level Surface – A properly graded topsoil layer fills low spots and smooths out imperfections, resulting in a more even lawn that’s easier to mow and less likely to collect standing water.

Nutrient Supply – Screened topsoil provides organic matter and essential nutrients that help reduce transplant stress and promote healthy growth from day one.

During installation, sod should also be laid with staggered seams, similar to a brick pattern. This prevents long continuous joints, helps the pieces knit together more evenly, and creates a stronger, more natural-looking lawn.

Finally, every new sod installation should be watered immediately after installation and kept consistently moist until the roots have firmly established, typically within 2–3 weeks.

The quality of a lawn isn’t determined by the day it’s installed, t’s determined by how well it’s prepared before the first roll of sod is ever laid.
