In A Country Garden would like to introduce you to 3 "New Additions" to Our Garden . First we have Julia Rose which is actually an Itoh Peony, second we have Bolero Rose and finally we have Strawberry Hill a David Austin climbing Rose . All three add something Very Special to our already over flowing Garden spaces . Cant wait for them to get settled in and perform their Magic.

Unfortunately for them our milk w**d plants are only about 2 inches tall at the moment , however they did appear to show keen interest in the few remaining Tulips in our garden .Stick around little buddies big things are about to happen . Peony season is just around the corner!.

ITOH PEONY UPDATE
As mentioned in our previous post regarding growing Itoh peonies. I very recently became aware of a local grower/ retailer of these rare and impossibly hard to source specimens . Tim and Donna from True North Garden Centre at 59 Hutchinson Rd near Warkworth has what I consider to be the finest selection of not only itoh peonies but also dozens of rare herbaceous and tree peonies as well . Many are potted up and waiting to be rehomed while others are growing on in the fields, which I was fortunate enough to receive a Tour. In addition to peonies as well as being hybredizers of Day Lillies they also have a huge selection of Hostas , field growing garlic and many other rare perennials. We came home with a very rare peony ( even for itohs)named Orange Victory and placed an order for another named Julia Rose Peony. The Julia Rose Peony is another highly regarded Itoh Peony, unfortunately the only potted up specimen he had was a bit elusive so true to form Tim took me out to the field and had me pick out the one I wanted from the very few that he had growing . Prices are very competitive and Tim and Donna are wonderful hosts. So head on over or check out their website, you wont be disappointed.

Its A Very Special Day Here at In A Country Garden..... My Itoh Peony tubers Have Arrived All the Way from British Columbia and they're looking fine! So far 👏 . I believe that I may have mentioned these ( Itohs) last year but it's worth mentioning again. So here goes....
Every One loves Peonies and the Itohs are the " new Kid on the block( or in the garden) " . Itoh Peonies are a cross between the common herbaceous peonies and the lesser known tree peonies and incorporate the best aspects of each. Thanks to Toichi Itoh who was obsessed with cross pollinating the two previously mentioned species, and after thousands of attempts finally got one to take . Sadly he never lived long enough to see it bloom. Fast forward to today . After decades of work and experimentation of cross pollinating what started out as just 3 different cultivars of itohs all of them yellow in colour and costing thousands of dollars each!. They have now evolved into dozens of specimens in a host of colours shapes and bloom sizes. The itohs have larger blooms , longer blooming flowers and more blooms per plant and because their stems are woody they dont flop over or require staking . Keep an eye out for them next time you're in a full feature Garden Centre . They can be a bit on the pricey side costing 3,4 or 5 times the price of a common herbaceous Peony . Good Luck and Happy Gardening !.
