We are thankful for our friends in PEI and grateful that they didn't need our services as this means that everyone the island is safe. Unfortunately, their neighbour's to the south weren't so lucky and we rolled on through to give them a hand with the long, hard task of cleaning up, getting services restored and roads open.

When duty calls, we answer.

With Hurricane Lee bearing down on the east coast, we mobilized 9 crews before the rise our sun this morning and plan to have our wheels and feet on the ground in PEI tomorrow afternoon before the brunt of the storm bears down. We are so grateful for the continued trust that our east coast friends place in us each time they call. This is how we know we've done it right. But we are so much more appreciative and grateful for all of our staff that rise to answer the call each time. Our company doesn't operate and succeed without these men and women that pour every part of themselves into their craft.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our founder, mentor, and heart of our organization, but we know that he would want us to push on. It was bitter sweet watching our crews pull out of the yard this morning knowing he wasn't there to be a part of it.

Bill, there are no words that could ever come close to expressing the love, gratitude, appreciation and respect every one of us has for you and everything you have done and everything you poured into this company. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We love you and we will hold your memory close as we move forward. Until we meet again ❤️

Move over EAB! There is a new baddie in town...

Oak wilt is a fungal pathogen (Bretziella fagacearum) killing thousands of oak trees in North American forests and woodlands each year. In June 2023, Oak Wilt was confirmed in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This is the first confirmed detection of Oak Wilt in Canada. It has also now been detected near Barrie, Ontario and in Niagara-on-the-Lake and movement restrictions are currently in place on the affected properties.

There are many pests and diseases of concern in the urban forest. It can be terrifying to think of Oak Wilt killing all the oaks in Ontario, but it is helpful to keep in mind that Oak Wilt has been around in Wisconsin and Michigan for decades, and while certainly killing many of their oak trees, it has not decimated them with great speed like we saw with EAB.

The fungus can spread from infected to healthy trees by underground roots and two groups of insects; the sap and bark feeding beetles. Oak wilt is highly susceptible in all species of red oak species. Fungal mats found on infected trees are transferred to the beetles’ bodies while feeding and then carried to other trees.

Here is some information on how to identify and protect against this new hazard...

What an incredible day!

Yesterday, we were able to get the whole company together in one place to do our first annual Heath and Safety and Operations meeting since COVID. It was a busy day, but we are so happy with how it went.

We set ourselves up at the Baltimore Arena so that we had more than enough space for our inside training as well as plenty of space outside to park some of our aerial trucks.

We take Health and Safety very seriously and understand how everyone in the company has a role to play in making sure their peers, the public's safety, and their own are always at the forefront while they are performing even the most basic of tasks in our industry. Health and Safety is not negotiable!

We covered everything from Vehicle Inspections, and Bucket Rescue to Back-Up Procedures and Aerial Rescue (lead by a couple of our former arborists Northumberland Tree Surgeons). We also welcomed our guest speaker, Dr. Paul Davison, to talk to our crews about stretching and repetitive movements and reducing sprains and strains in the workplace.

We are grateful for all of our crews, and ensuring that they arrive home at the end of the day (or week) safe and in one piece is our No. 1 priority.
