I should introduce myself properly.
I’m Michael-Rose, the co-founder, creative director and garden designer behind Fieldstead.
Fieldstead is new, but the work behind it isn’t. For years I worked as Michael Rose Gardens, and before I ever imagined having a studio or building a larger practice, I was simply trying to make gardens that felt good to be in.
I learned by doing and observing. By planting a lot of plants, moving a lot of plants, watching what thrived and what didn’t, and returning to the same gardens year after year. My work has changed a lot along the way. I’ve become more interested in restraint, repetition and plants that really want to be where they’re planted. Less interested in filling every space. More interested in what a garden might become over time. Never worried, never panicked.
I still love the whole process — drawing and planning, wandering nurseries looking for the right plants, laying everything out on site, planting, editing, and coming back later to see what happened.
The last slide is a planting plan from the Michael Rose Gardens years. Looking at those old drawings now, I can see how much has changed, but also how much of what became Fieldstead was already there.
Fieldstead feels like the natural next chapter. A broader practice, and one that gives us room to think about the garden, the landscape, the home, and the things we build within it as a whole.
I’ll introduce Wolfgang next. He’s a pretty important part of where all of this is going.

An introduction to the other half of Fieldstead.

Before Fieldstead, Wolfgang worked as Noble Custom Carpentry, building custom kitchens, cabinetry and architectural woodwork with a level of precision that continues to shape everything he makes.

This kitchen was completed in 2016 — a project that still feels just as considered nearly ten years later. Wolfgang built and installed the cabinetry, bringing his meticulous attention to proportion, joinery, fit and finish to every detail.

The kitchen was designed by Jill Jankovich, whose beautiful design we’re very happy to credit here.

As Fieldstead takes shape, we’re looking forward to sharing more of Wolfgang’s work alongside the landscapes, gardens and other projects you’ve been seeing here. Our work has always had a life both outdoors and in.

Sesleria autumnalis (Autumn Moor Grass) is having its moment.
We use this grass often, not because it demands attention, but because of what it does for everything around it. Repeated through a planting, it creates rhythm and continuity — a soft structure for the more expressive plants to move through.
By late summer, its pale flower spikes begin to catch the light, like summer sparklers, appearing and reappearing throughout the garden.
Sometimes the plants doing the most work are the quietest ones.

A garden is always evolving.

At Walton, we’ve been planting into an already beautiful framework of mature trees and existing stonework by Forestview Landscaping. The garden itself was designed from the ground up by Fieldstead, beginning with a commissioned landscape drawing and planting plan and taking shape over a few seasons.

Each year, something gets added, shifted, reconsidered or allowed to settle in. The garden gets a little fuller, a little softer, and a little more itself.

Our clients here are always dreaming up the next addition to their home and garden. At this point, they’ve suggested we build ourselves a suite on their property.

A little update from us 🌿

You may have noticed that Michael Rose Gardens has officially become Fieldstead here on Facebook.

Over the next little while, we’ll be slowly turning everything over to our new name and brand identity. Like most good things, it’s a process — so you may still see Michael Rose Gardens here and there while we make the transition.

There’s lots more to come. We’ll be sharing more about Fieldstead, the work we’re doing in homes, gardens and landscapes, and the process of bringing our new brick-and-mortar studio and garden shop on Main Street in Warkworth to life.

We’d love for you to follow along as it all takes shape.

We’ve been working quietly on this for a long time, and today we finally get to share it.

Michael Rose Gardens alongside Noble Custom Carpentry is becoming Fieldstead.

This feels like a natural evolution of the work we’ve been doing over the past several years. Our love of gardens and and planting is still very much at the heart of it, but Fieldstead gives us room to bring together landscape design, planting, building and craft under one name.

We’ve also got some pretty exciting news to go along with it: this fall, we’ll be opening a Fieldstead studio and garden shop at 28 Main Street in Warkworth.

The shop will be a home base for our design and build work, as well as a small, carefully curated garden shop. We’ll eventually be bringing the shop online too, so our new website will be coming a little later as we work on integrating everything together.

There is lots more to share about the space and what we’re planning for it, but we’ll save some of that for the weeks ahead.

For now, we’re just really happy to finally introduce Fieldstead.

Artful landscapes, rooted to place.

One year later.
This garden began as a conversation about place.
A modern new build farmhouse set into shallow limestone soils, surrounded by cedar and juniper scrub, where the landscape could have easily become a collection of foundation shrubs and lawn.
Instead, we designed a garden that belongs to this site.
Every planting was chosen to thrive in the thin, rocky soil, soften the architecture, and create a long season of movement and bloom while asking very little once established.
One of my favourite parts of this project is that while we designed the planting and decking, the client completed the physical installation themselves. It became a true collaboration, and seeing these photographs that the client took and sent us a year later is incredibly rewarding.
The best gardens aren’t finished when the last plant goes into the ground. They’re just beginning.
