With winter now on its way there can be time to think about our gardens and lawns, what worked well this season and what changes can be made for the next one. Fox Grove is starting a little series on Tips for a Healthy Yard. This week is Soil.

Leave the 🍁s.

This fall try moving or mulching your fallen leaves to spread in your flower beds or to keep on your lawn.

Leaves have nutrients that strengthen your soil when they breakdown over the winter. Bagged leaves sit in a landfill and produce methane. Also, animals and insects use fallen leaves as habitats.

Black Walnut Trees. They are beautiful and native to North America. But their roots extend 50 feet or more from the trunk and release a natural herbicide, called juglone. This makes it very difficult to grow anything near a Black Walnut Tree.

And the fruit. The heavy nuts fall from the tree like large golf balls. We collected many of them in baskets in order to mow the lawn. But the squirrels had other ideas. 🐿️ They moved all the nuts from the baskets into our back shed, hiding them in the floor and everywhere in between - storing the nuts for the winter, or mocking us.
