Alright, truth time for all the other DIYers out there

When your spouse asks, "How long is this project going to take?" how do you answer?

1) Wildly underestimate the time (and maybe the budget) and then work like mad to somehow make it happen. (The contractor special.)

2) Give a realistic estimate and risk never getting approval for the project in the first place.

3) Be brutally honest about the time and cost, making the whole thing sound like an enormous undertaking that nobody wants to start.

The greenhouse is officially all planted!

Every year we tell ourselves the same thing: "Let's grow fewer peppers this year so there's more airflow and the greenhouse doesn't get overcrowded."

And every year... we completely ignore our own advice

Apparently there are just too many interesting varieties to say no to.

Next up, we'll be removing the lower shelves and installing a trellis system for melonsβ€”which will also help support the peppers once they really start taking off. Here's hoping we left ourselves enough room this time!

Saw these artichokes in downtown Vancouver the other day and it was a great reminder of just how much difference a little change in climate can make.

We're only about 100 km away, and yet these plants are absolutely massive and already flowering. Meanwhile, even our artichokes that survived the winter are nowhere near this size yet.

It's easy to think of a region as having one climate, but sometimes moving just 20 kmβ€”or even a few blocks closer to the oceanβ€”can completely change how plants grow. Pretty neat to see it in action!

We've always talked about the power of our Premium Seedling Soil Blend and how our clients don't need to add any fertilizer until their plants are in the ground. In fact, for many customers using our soil to start their own seedlings, all they need to do is add water.

This year, we accidentally put that claim to the test.

We were a little late planting our tomatoes, so they've been sitting in the same 3.5" pots since April 11th. Since then, they've received nothing but waterβ€”no liquid feed, no extra fertilizer, nothing.

Now, 66 days later, they're only just starting to show signs that they could use a nutrient boost.

Over two months of healthy growth powered almost entirely by what's built into the soil is pretty darn impressive if you ask us.

We've just dropped off some seedlings at the Little Free Library on Beacon Rd, Hope, BC!

Books inspire us, gardens nourish us, and both bring people together.

Grab a book. Pick up a seedling. Plant it in your garden. Then enjoy your new book in the shade while your garden grows.

Don't wait too long. They'll start getting thirsty and wilted in this heat.

One of our favorite things about growing seedlings is seeing where they end up.

This week we donated a few hundred vegetable seedlings to The Salvation Army's Grow A Row program. These plants will be grown by local volunteers and the fresh produce will be donated back to the food bank to help families throughout our community.

It's pretty amazing to think that a tiny seedling can eventually help put fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and other vegetables on someone's table.

A huge thank you to everyone who supports us each year. Opportunities like this are only possible because of you.

Breakfast of Champions!

Well... more like a late lunch at this point!

We're spending the day at the annual plant sale at Gwayne Vaughan Park, and while this was technically our breakfast, things have been so busy that we haven't even had a chance to post until now!

Today's gourmet menu:

β˜• Tim Hortons hot chocolate
🌢️ Spicy instant ramen

Is it the healthiest meal? Not even close. But after getting up at 7:00 AM and jumping straight into a busy day of helping gardeners find their perfect plants, it checked all the boxes:

- Quick and easy
- Warm on this not-so-warm spring (or is it summer?) day
- A little sweetness
- A little spice
- Just enough fuel to keep us going

The sale has been fantastic, and we're so grateful to everyone who has stopped by to support local growers and take home some new garden additions.

There's still one hour left before we pack up, so if you've been thinking about coming down, now's your chance!

See you at Gwayne Vaughan Park!
