Having a business in your yard means we have to think things through carefully and do some creative problem-solving. We require a commercial dumpster that is readily accessible to the large truck that comes every second week to empty it. Since the parking lot adjacent to the shop is needed to stockpile finished features, we opted to put it nearer to the front of the property. But dumpsters are not very pretty, so we hid it inside a good-sized mountain/planter. Giant metal doors allow access to the dumpster. Behind that, we built a second room to house the riding and push mowers, as well as other yard tools. Between the ‘mountain and fence is where the various recycling bins are, handy but hidden from the front of the yard. This structure has been in various stages of finish for many years. Over the last few weeks, our crew completed the sculpting of the last timbers, and today the last of the paint was polished off.

SignMedia, Canada’s premier sign magazine, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. As part of that celebration, the editor selected one article from each year to feature in this month’s magazine. The story she picked for 2011 was an article about one of our earliest dimensional signs made on our CNC router. It was exciting to discover the capabilities of both the router and software back then. That journey continues to this day! Reading the article was a fun trip down memory lane.

On the rear wall of our shop is a plywood wall that houses our ‘Zombie Apocalypse Station’… a fun name for the rack where we store our shovels, rakes, hoes, and other garden tools. We fastened plywood to the insulated concrete forms (ICF), and over the last twenty years, the plywood had begun to rot a little at the bottom. Rather than replace the plywood, we cut off the bottom three feet, and the crew added some sculpted concrete rock. Over the next few weeks, this, along with the rest of the rear of the shop, will receive fresh paint to make it last for decades to come.

It has been a fabulous summer with lots of fun drives in my Jeep - with the top off, of course. Now, as the days get a little shorter, the temperatures get cooler, and the rainy season approaches, it is time to put the top and full doors back on the Jeep. How long I delay installing the top on the Jeep depends on the upcoming weather forecast and planned trips that require leaving the truck at the airport for multiple days. While there will still be some warm days when I wish the top were gone, today was the day I officially declared the summer season over for 2026.

The crew is slowly working their way around the back of the property. The repainting of the shop continues. For the first coat, we are using up leftover paint, so it looks kinda weird until we get to the blends. The shop is now 23 years old, and it is definitely time for a refresh. They will keep chipping away on nice days until the winter weather sets in or we get real busy in the shop.

Our fence is now fully sculpted and painted. Today I hauled in a couple of loads of garden soil to complete the project....

Our fence is now fully sculpted and painted. Today I hauled in a couple of loads of garden soil to complete the project. We’ll allow it to settle for a few weeks and when the weather is a little cooler Becke will go on a landscape hunting expedition to source five trees and some shrubs. The planter timbers that form the theme work on our garden/dumpster shed will be painted in the next while depending on the weather. This has been an ambitious, fun and educational project that nicely fit into our summer schedule. I’ll provide one last update when the landscaping is in. Stay tuned…

The boys did their second day of sculpting on the Hazelnut Inn gate tower. Peter decided to go with brickwork from top to bottom rather than using a mix of large stones and bricks like on the second tower. They should be able to finish it tomorrow, making it ready for paint next week. Stay tuned…

I am currently transferring the files I had saved decades ago from CD’s to cloud storage. Many of the CD’s are no longer readable. Some of the drawings, although now digitized, were hand-drawn on paper back in the early 1990’s. This concept was an early version of a mini-golf course that I was dreaming of back then. We had wanted to build it on Vancouver Island, but it wasn’t to be until we constructed a more advanced version called Giggle Ridge at Cultus Lake ten years later.

We’ve long had to keep our gates closed to prevent random uninvited visitors from driving into the yard. Yarrow Central Road is a main artery for reaching the Lower Mainland’s favourite lake, and in summertime it is often very busy. Many who drive by are intrigued by our unique house and are curious about what we do. Often they believe our place is a tourist attraction. We certainly don’t mind those who stop to get a closer look or even grab a picture from the sidewalk. For security and safety reasons, our property is off-limits to anyone except those we invite to our studio. Our new sign was installed on our gate today, giving our visitors a little more information.

Each year during our slower summer season, we go through the shop and entire property to make an extensive list of what we can improve, repair or finish. The list is often quite long. One of this year’s items is a new sign for our gate. Guests on their way to the Hazelnut Inn often pull into our driveway, thinking they have arrived at the Inn. It creates confusion when the keypad doesn’t open the gate with the codes they have been given for the Hazelnut Inn. We’ve added a tiny sign above our keypad, but a second, larger notice on our gate seemed to be necessary as well. For those who missed our award-winning sign on the road, we’ve identified the Imagination Corporation one more time - just to be sure. But as we all know, it may not work, for very few people actually read signs. :)
