Structural Support Systems: Wood Post vs. Lally Column

This technical illustration compares two common methods for providing vertical structural support in construction: a traditional timber Wood Post and a steel-based Lally Column. The image highlights how each system transfers loads from an overhead horizontal beam down to a concrete footing, emphasizing the different fastening hardware and base connections required for wood versus steel components.

Key Components & Features

Wood Post System:

Steel Connector: A metal bracket (post cap) that secures the horizontal beam to the top of the wood post to prevent lateral movement.

Wood Post: A heavy timber vertical member that carries the compressive load.

Steel Pin: A reinforcement at the base that anchors the post to the concrete, preventing the bottom of the post from shifting.

Concrete Pad/Footing: A solid base that distributes the weight of the structure into the ground.

Lally Column System:

Lally Column: A circular steel pipe, often filled with concrete, designed for high load-bearing capacity with a smaller footprint than wood.

Top Plate: A steel plate welded to the top of the column, secured to the beam with Nails or Lag Screws.

Base Plate & Bolts: A square steel fl**ge at the bottom of the column that is securely anchored to the footing using heavy-duty bolts.

Footing: A concrete foundation similar to the wood post setup, providing a stable platform for the steel assembly.

Design Summary

The illustration serves as a comparative guide for architectural and engineering choices. While the wood post offers a traditional aesthetic and ease of fastening with standard brackets, the Lally column provides a more compact, industrial-strength solution often used in basements or commercial spaces. Both systems rely on a robust concrete footing to ensure the structural integrity and stability of the building's frame.

Well we did it. We have most of the year booked in for work!! This winter seemed to drag out so we took the time to fill our schedule but now with the weather finally turning steady we can start getting our projects underway! With the schedule being full we will be looking for labourers, 1 experienced person to start that knows their way around a site, that will likely end up being a lead hand. We have the work, now we want to build a solid crew with a good work environment where we can all work and learn together.
