Cultivating Vegetables and Herbs in Pots: A Guide to Container Gardening

Container gardening is a great way to grow vegetables and herbs in small spaces like balconies or patios. The key is choosing the right pot size for each plant. Here’s a quick guide:

Choosing the Right Pot Size

5L Pots: Lettuce, Chard, Parsley, Basil, Chives

10L Pots: Radish, Celery, Turnip, Carrot, Kale

15L Pots: Cabbage, Beet, Garlic, Brussels Sprouts, Chilies

20L Pots: Tomato, Broccoli, Pepper, Chícharo (peas), Cauliflower

40L Pots: Cucumber, Potatoes, Watermelon, Zucchini, Melon

Quick Tips for Success

Use Quality Soil: Nutrient-rich, well-draining potting mix.

Sunlight: At least 6-8 hours daily.

Water Consistently: Pots dry out faster than ground soil.

Fertilize: Use organic or liquid fertilizers as needed.

Drainage: Ensure pots have drainage holes.

Support Climbing Plants: Use trellises or stakes.

Final Thoughts

With the right pot size and care, container gardening is an easy and effective way to grow fresh produce at home.

My broccoli florets 🥦 are finally coming, but only on some of my plants. 🤷‍♀️

The brassica veggies aren’t big fans of the intense heat we’ve been getting lately so they’ll often grow HUGE rapidly and go to seed, skipping the actual veggie creating stage when the weather has been as warm as it’s been.

I’ll be feeding many of the dud plants to the chickens, keep some for seed for next year, and start more seeds today for my fall garden.
Not everything we plant turns out the way we hope it will…. And that’s ok! Like everything in nature (including us human beings 🙋‍♀️🙋👶), we grow the best we can under the conditions provided. It was just too darn hot for this broccoli and I should have planted it out far earlier.

The joy of gardening is not only found in our end result of the vegetables and flowers, but also in:
👩‍🌾 the daily activities we do there,💪 the exercise,💨 the fresh air,💫 the quiet meditative time we receive,🧐 and everything we learn from season to season.
It encompasses all of it, which is important to remember when we feel frustrated about the plants we lovingly tended to don’t turn out to be a big beautiful crowns of broccoli! 🥦 😁
