Thinking about switching to Ultra-Low Overnight? Read this first.

Without a battery, ULO's on-peak rate (39.1¢/kWh) is actually higher than what most homes pay on Time-of-Use (20.3¢/kWh). Switching alone can raise your bill, not lower it.

Ontario's Ultra-Low Overnight rate drops to 3.9¢/kWh between 11pm–7am. On-peak, it's 39.1¢. That's a 35.2¢ gap on every kWh.

MYTH: "Solar doesn't really work in Canadian winters."

FACT: Cold weather is actually good for solar panels. Heat is what drags down panel efficiency — industry estimates suggest cold, sunny days are close to ideal generating conditions, not a problem to work around. Snow isn't usually an issue either, since panels are installed at an angle and snow tends to slide off on its own.

What does change in winter is day length — shorter days mean fewer sunlight hours, so output naturally dips compared to summer. That's exactly why we don't design a system around a single sunny afternoon or a rough rule of thumb. We size every mySolar Group installation using a household's, farm's, or business's actual year-round consumption data, so the system is built for your real usage across all four seasons — not just the good months.

Attention Ontario business and commercial property owners: if solar has been on your radar for your building, the incentive math just shifted a bit.

As of June 30, 2026, Ontario's Save on Energy Retrofit program lowered its incentive rate for small-to-medium commercial solar systems (systems larger than 10kW up to 1MW) from $860 per kilowatt to $770 per kilowatt — about a 10.5% reduction. The province says the change is meant to better align the incentive with actual energy and demand savings and keep the program sustainable long-term.

Worth noting: this specific change applies to the commercial-scale tier of the program. It's a different rate category than the incentive most homeowners with a typical rooftop system would apply under.

Quick one for anyone who's looked at their hydro bill this summer and winced: Ontario's on-peak Time-of-Use rate (weekdays, 11am–5pm) is currently 20.3¢/kWh — more than double the 9.8¢/kWh off-peak rate. And that on-peak window is almost exactly when solar panels are producing the most power.

That overlap is a big part of why solar makes sense for a lot of Ontario homes and businesses — but how much it actually helps depends entirely on your own usage pattern, not a generic average. A business with a mid-day production line, a farm with seasonal equipment loads, and a household that's mostly out during the day all need very different system designs, even at the same address and roof.

A new study published this week put an actual number on solar's waste problem — and it's a big one. Researchers estimate the world could generate 297–402 million tonnes of solar panel waste by 2060. Handled properly, recycling that material could unlock close to $1 trillion in economic value globally, from materials like glass, silicon, silver, and aluminum that would otherwise just be thrown away.

That's a global, long-term projection — not a claim about any one company's numbers — but it's a good reminder that solar's environmental story doesn't end at installation. What happens to a panel when it's done matters too.

It's part of why recycling isn't an afterthought for us. Every damaged or decommissioned panel from our own mySolar installations gets recycled — 100% of them.
