Disconnected this pool pump in Trail today. The motor is wired for 240v and is on a 240v 2-pole breaker. The receptacle and gfci cord-end used are both only rated for 120v. Due to the mismatch of voltages, both the cord-end and receptacle were melting down because of excessive heat. When tested, the gfci function on the cord-end failed to trip, due to the 120v - 240v mismatch or heat damage to internal components. The pump motor is also missing the external bonding conductor installed to it's frame. Almost a blessing that the receptacle started to melt because internal pump seal failure could have resulted in shock to the pool with inadequate protection.
Never mismatch electrical equipment ratings. Always follow manufacturer specifications. Especially around water systems.
