Hunting Awareness: Know Before You Hunt 🦌

Collared caribou are an important tool for biologists and First Nations communities working to better understand caribou movements, habitat use, herd health, and population trends.

For hunters on the land, knowing what a collar looks like β€” and understanding why it is there β€” is an important part of responsible hunting.

As shown in this poster, caribou may be wearing different types of collars. Some are brightly coloured and easy to spot, while others, such as solar-powered Solex collars, can be much harder to see from a distance.

πŸ“ If you encounter a collared caribou:
β€’ Take a moment to identify the collar before harvesting.
β€’ Remember that collars provide valuable information for ongoing caribou research and monitoring.
β€’ Follow all applicable hunting regulations and local harvesting guidance.
β€’ Give wildlife a respectful distance and avoid unnecessary disturbance.

Collaring helps researchers learn about the herd over time β€” information that can support conservation, management, and the continued protection of caribou and their habitat.

Responsible hunting starts with awareness. Know your wildlife. Know your equipment. Know what those collars mean.
