Hello Everyone,

With summer wrapping up and the kids heading back to school, it's a great time to give your water heater a little attention. Flushing out any sediment that built up over the summer helps keep things running smoothly and gets you ready for the colder months. If you feel up to the task, here are some easy steps to follow:

1. The day or night before you plan to drain your tank, turn off the power and try to use up as much hot water as you can. This way, you won't waste energy or money.

2. Hook up a garden hose to the drain at the bottom of your tank and run it to your sump pit or floor drain. Open up a hot water tap in your house to let air in while you drain and refill the tank.

3. Open the drain port first, before you shut off the water supply. This relieves pressure in the tank.

4. Once the water starts draining, turn off the cold water supply and let the tank empty out. If you want to remove extra sediment, turn the water back on for a bit and let it run until the water runs clear.

5. When you're done, close the drain, fill the tank back up, and wait until you get a steady stream of water from your open hot tap. This helps push out any remaining air.

6. Finally, close the hot tap and turn the power back on to your tank. It usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes for the water to heat up again, depending on your tank size.

Here's your radon testing reminder!

Radon is a naturally occurring gas from soil, rock, and water. Outdoors, it’s low risk, but indoors, it can accumulate and pose serious health hazards by emitting radioactive particles.
Exposure to high levels of radon over time increases the risk of developing lung cancer, especially for smokers, making it a serious concern for homeowners. Testing is important because you may be exposed without realizing it.

Testing for radon is simple and affordable. Buy a kit online, at local stores, or hire a certified professional. We recommend the 1AT Alpha Track Long-Term Radon Test Kit by Accustar, which is more accurate than the digital option.

If your test shows high radon, stay calm. Take action above 100 Bq/m³ (World Health Organization) and 200 Bq/m³ (Government of Canada). First, open windows and use fans, especially in basements and lower floors, to increase ventilation. Seal cracks in floors and walls to block radon entry. For a lasting solution, contact a certified mitigation professional.

Hello everyone,

Today I want to talk about water heater anode rods and why they matter for your home.

Anode rods help keep your water heater tank from rusting out. Once the rod is used up, it needs to be replaced to keep your tank protected. You’ll usually find anode rods made from magnesium, aluminum, or sometimes a plug-in titanium style.

A quick tip: If you have soft water at home, avoid magnesium anode rods. When magnesium mixes with soft water, it can actually make your water flammable, which is definitely something we want to avoid.

How long does an anode rod last? It depends on your water, but as a general rule, they last up to 5 years with city water and about 2-3 years if you’re on a well. It’s a good idea to check your water heater every so often. I like the Corro-Protec anode rod because it helps reduce scaling, eliminates that sulphur smell, and does a great job of preventing corrosion.

Hello, everyone,

Today’s tip comes from a few recent emergency calls about pressure tanks. If you have a pressure tank at home, take a moment to check both the tank and the pressure gauge. Over time, these can rust, start leaking, or stop giving you the right readings. Catching these issues early can save you a lot of trouble later on.

I recommend giving your pressure tank and gauge a quick look every six months. If you notice any rust, leaks, or damage like in the pictures, it’s a good idea to replace them or call your local plumber for advice. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
