Hello, everyone!

Today's tip is for your kitchen: before you run your dishwasher, turn on the hot water at your sink and let it run until it feels hot. This helps your dishwasher start off with hot water right away, so your dishes get a better clean.

Hello Everyone,

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had quite a few calls about hot water heaters, and the main trouble has been draining them. To help you avoid an unexpected bill, here’s a simple step-by-step guide for flushing or draining your tank at home.

Quick tip: If your tank is fairly new and you flush it every year, you can usually just hook up a hose and let it run until the water comes out clear.

1. The day or night before you plan to drain your tank, turn off the power and try to use up as much hot water as you can. This way, you won’t waste energy or money.

2. Next, attach a hose to the drain at the bottom of your tank and run it to your sump pit or floor drain. Be sure to open a hot water tap somewhere in your house—this helps air flow in and out while you drain and refill the tank.

3. Open the drain port first, before you shut off the water supply to the tank. This helps relieve any pressure inside.

4. Once the water starts draining, turn off the cold water supply and let the tank empty out completely. If you want to clear out any sediment, turn the water back on for a bit after it’s drained, and let it run until the water comes out clear.

5. After that, close the drain port, refill the tank, and wait until you get a steady flow of water from your open hot tap. This helps get all the air out.

6. Once you’ve got a steady stream, close the hot tap and turn the power back on to your tank. It usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes for the water to heat up again, depending on your tank size.

I want to talk about something important you might need in your home.

If you've just moved in, are renovating, or just curious, check under your kitchen and bathroom sinks. Do you see shut-off valves? If not, consider installing some.

Shut-off valves under your sinks make servicing or changing faucets much easier and help prevent leaks. With shut-offs in place, you won't need to turn off water to your whole house just to work on one faucet. Whether your home is brand new or has a few years under its belt, checking your cabinets for these handy valves is a smart step toward peace of mind.

Hello everyone,

With spring showers on the way, now is a great time to make sure your sump pump is ready to go.

A simple way to check your sump pump is to pour some water into the sump basin. If the float rises and the pump kicks in to remove the water, you’re all set! That means both your pump and float are working as they should.

Sometimes, you might not be able to test your sump pump this way:

1. If your pit has drainage holes into gravel and you can’t fill it with water, try gently lifting the float by hand. If the pump turns on, you know it’s working!

2. If your pit is sealed, check for a piggyback plug that connects the pump motor to the float. You can unplug the float and plug the pump motor directly into the outlet to see if it runs. Once you hear it working, plug everything back the way it was. Just keep in mind, this only checks the motor, not the float.

Don’t wait until you have a problem! Taking a few minutes to check your sump pump now can help you avoid flooding and expensive repairs later.
