I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend! I know I did :)

We are open by appointment until the ground freezes, which means there is still lots of time to plant! All of our 3" pots are now $1 each, with the exception of Blue Vervain being $0.25 each.

If you want to book an appointment please send me a message on Facebook, or send an email at [email protected]

Annuals are not quite as common as perennials in the native plant world, but they do exist. The Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata) and the Wild Cucumber Vine (Echinocystis lobata) are two examples of annuals.

Partridge pea is a bumblebee favourite! They produce so many blooms and can be quite prolific. All the seeds in the photo are only half of what mine produced this year. They have 'spring loaded' beans that explode and fling their seeds up to 20 feet away (have witnessed myself in my house, haha)! You never really know where next years plants will show up!

Cucumber vine can be a vigorous grower and is able to cover a large area, I've personally seen one plant cover 40 square feet! They have some interesting green coloured flowers, and are overall a lighter green shade adding some nice contrast to a garden trellis.

🍁🌼🍁 If you are interested in these plants, I have seeds available now! 🍁🌼🍁

If you live in Ontario I can potentially send them to you via mailing. Please enquire if interested.

It is honestly best to sow your annuals in the fall where you want them to grow, that way they will grow big and robust next year. I have found that purchasing annual natives makes for a slightly less vigorous grower, especially is planted out past May. Now that is of course my own personal experience with annuals!

Blue Vervian (Verbena hastata)!

We planted too many, accidentally, into our 3 inch pots. Our oops is your gain! They are now $0.25 each! We probably have about 100 of them left, and I don't want to have to overwinter them all, haha. Better if someone came and snagged them at this amazing deal and got them into the ground πŸ˜‰

🌼🌼We have lots of Maximilian Sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) available! 🌼🌼

If you have a location that you want something tall, that can grow decently quick and look a little wild, this might just be the flower for you!

They can grow to be 10 ft tall, similar in size to cup plants and cutleaf coneflowers. Birds love the seeds, had to fight them last year for a just a small handful πŸ˜†.

They are currently on an extra sale of $1 each, or 5 for $4 in 3" pots. Come and wild up your garden for the fall! We have some of the best prices around 😊

Happy October 1st!

It is seed collecting season!! Although there have been many seeds that I've collected over the summer, this is when the bulk of our flowers and grasses are getting ready for harvesting.

Yesterday I collected 14 species, with many more to come!

Pictured below are just some of the species I collected from my gardens:
Upland white goldenrod
Dense blazing star
Pale purple coneflower
White snakeroot
Long headed coneflower
Cup plant

When collecting seeds for myself I don't worry about cleaning them too much, unless there is an excessive amount of chaff present.

Growing plants from seeds so is very fun!

As noted below, our final open days are October 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10.

After that we shall only be open by appointment until the ground is frozen. You can definitely keep planting now! I know I will be πŸ˜‰

We still have lots of stock left in 1 gallon to 1.5 gallon pots! In our 3 inch pots we have sold out of a few species recently and some have limited quantities (less then 10) in others. Grab them before they're gone!

When you're about to get a really nice photo... and then the wind blows and makes the butterfly blurry! That is one of the reasons there is typically 17 photos of the same thing.

Oops... wind.
Oops... didn't focus correctly.
Oops... why did I pick that angle? .. oh yeah, position of the sun plays a roll...
Wait, where did it go?? *flies to another flower or away entirely*

As someone who takes photos of insects and flowers and other things that move... I feel your pain with every attempted photo! But there's always at least 1 that is good, or decent enough... or sometimes even great!
