The drainage business isn't always private jets and runway models... although, to be fair, it mostly is. 😄

Sometimes, things go sideways.

On the tile plow, the final drives are the iron fists of the entire machine. They take every bit of horsepower the engine can make, along with heat, mud, shock loads, and constant year-round punishment. They live a hard life.

When I bought this plow eight years ago, I was given one piece of advice: **take care of the final drives.** They're incredibly robust, but they're also incredibly expensive. And if you damage one, you're generally not repairing it—you're replacing it.

So we've made them a priority. Frequent oil changes, regular oil sampling, careful monitoring, and watching bearing wear like a hawk. The goal has always been to get every possible hour out of them through good maintenance, not luck.

Then it finally happened.

We pulled the drain plug on one final drive... and **nothing came out.**

Uh oh.... 😰

Looking inside, we realized we'd gotten unbelievably lucky. Somehow we caught it before any visible damage occurred. Judging by what we found, I suspect the main bearing had finally worn enough to let the main seal distort and dump the oil. I honestly think we found it within hours of that happening.

Huge shout-out to **AMSOIL Severe Gear 250**. I have a feeling it may have just saved us from a catastrophic failure. And after many thousands of hours of operation in the toughest clay Haldimand has to offer, the bearing wear measures close to new still!

Getting the final drive off the track frame was an adventure in itself. When it finally broke loose, it didn't fall—it launched! At roughly **1,000 pounds**, if we'd got the trajectory right, we should have been able to bomb Tokyo. 😂

A big thank you to the team at BRON for putting us in touch with a local rebuild shop. It looks like we'll be rebuilding this one for around **$4,600** instead of replacing it for something closer to **$46,000**. 😮‍💨🍀

Now the race is on. We've got customers waiting, and we're doing everything we can to get the plow back where it belongs—in the field.

Good maintenance doesn't prevent failures. It just gives you a fighting chance when they happen.

We completed a drainage project for a customer with a visual impairment. In addition to our standard as-built map, I had this accessible version prepared to better meet his needs. It was well received.

For our customers that follow us, our tile supplier notified us that these fuel prices will eventually hit plastic prices. Apparently resin prices have nearly doubled since they last purchased. It sounds like spring pricing is secure, but summer may bring large price hikes for tile. We encourage our customers to reach out if they are thinking of investing in their land this summer

A landowner recently called to ask about grant programs available. This is what I have found, and I invite anyone who knows of others to let us know.

We have worked with landowners who were able to get a small amount of funding for erosion control, as part of a larger project.

This program is in the Grand River watershed. Others might find similar programs in other watersheds.

As part of our work to develop a corporate Customer Service Strategy, we’re gathering feedback from people who use or interact with any of our programs and services. Your insights will help us understand what’s working well, where improvements are needed, and how we can deliver better service ac...
