PSA,
I see this 2-3 times a year , usually around this time when the temperature drops. I’ll get a call that some of the receptacles aren’t working properly or receptacles/lights.

The first thing I ask is are there any space heaters/ portable heaters plugged in anywhere ? 9 times out of 10 that’s the issue. I look for any signs that the receptacles have gotten hot, warping, melting, burnt looking. I test the receptacles that aren’t working and then start pulling them out and will find this. Melted wiring , melted plastic etc.

The insulation on that wire is supposed to be white, the heater that was plugged into this receptacle was rated at 12.5 amps which if it were the only thing plugged into that circuit , would probably be ok but, thats never the case. Also whoever installed the receptacles did it the lazy way and didn’t put the wiring under the screws, they used the little hole on the back and shoved the wire in. This is a feature on these receptacles but over time the connection wears down and weakens.

I have seen this issue with the wiring under the screws also but it’s not as common. Long story short, be mindful of your heaters and what all is plugged in on the same circuit. The heat should be coming from the heater not the receptacles 😬
