Why we obsess over a flat base before a single yard of concrete gets poured πŸ‘‡

Today on the Creekside Golf build, we've got Olin getting trained up on one of the most important skills on any jobsite: shooting grades with a laser level.

Here's what's actually happening in this clip. That laser sends out a perfectly level reference line across the whole pad. Caleb runs the receiver up and down the grade rod until it reads dead-on, and that tells us exactly where the gravel is high or low β€” sometimes down to a fraction of an inch. James follows behind raking the stone to that mark so the entire base sits perfectly flat. πŸ“

Why does it matter this much?

πŸ”Ή A flat base = a flat slab. Concrete is only as good as what's underneath it. A dialed-in gravel base means consistent slab thickness, no weak spots, and far less risk of cracking down the road.

πŸ”Ή Drainage & compaction. Even, well-graded stone lets water move and gives the slab uniform support so it doesn't settle unevenly.

πŸ”Ή The next crew depends on us. See the deadline? We need this done today so the heating guys can come in on the weekend and lay the in-floor radiant heating lines β€” those tubes get embedded right in the concrete to heat the building from the floor up. If our grade is off, their install is off, and the whole pour gets pushed.

That's why Jordan's staying right on the crew. πŸ’ͺ Construction is a chain β€” every trade is setting up the next one, and it all starts with getting the boring stuff exactly right.

Concrete doesn’t have to be boring.
It just has to be done right.
