Where were you on this day? 👇

August 20, 2016. Kingston, Ontario. The Tragically Hip played their final show. Gord Downie stood on that stage one last time, and Canada didn’t just watch — we showed up.

This deck is hand-burned. The Hip logo, Gord’s face, his signature, a maple leaf. All done with a torch, transferred ink and a lot of patience. My way of saying thank you for the music that raised us.

Roughly 11.7 million Canadians watched/ listened with friends, family and complete strangers as Gord gave his last performance on a night Canada will forever remember. 🇨🇦

Don’t get me wrong! ✋

I love having a clean shop, i actually like the process of organizing and cleaning it regularly. However if something needs attention or and idea comes to mind I don’t let the mess stop me from starting.

Having a clean shop for me and cleaning it before a project helps me plan everything out, helps clear my mind. Finding that balance is key. I still at times struggle with wanting things a certain way before I start a project, pushing past that is something I’ve learned over time.

Anyone relate to this?

Lit the birdhouse on fire. On purpose.
Oak frame nailed and glued. Cedar roof to fit.
Shou sugi ban — you burn the wood instead of painting or staining it. Old way of doing things, still holds up.
Teak ledge, tung oil and beeswax to finish it off.

Where does the music take you?
Cut from a solid block of maple. Shaped roughly, refined to the end piece and finished with mineral oil.

What started as a simple idea — a dining table to fit a specific space — turned into something far more beautiful than we ever imagined.

As a rough carpenter for many years, stepping into the finer side of woodworking was completely new territory for me. I didn’t have all the tools or the knowledge, and honestly wasn’t sure I was even capable of completing a live edge table.

After selecting the base and finishing the top, it was time to bring the two together — an experience in itself. The base wasn’t stable until it was secured to the top, and even then it needed a little extra support to eliminate some vibration and prevent shifting. Metal rods (not shown in the picture) fixed this problem. It was a known issue so the rods themselves blended well with the aesthetic.

But it all came together.

Made as a wedding gift for a good friend, this piece has proven to last — standing the test of time for over 10 years and still going. 🪵
