Did you know? 🌱

When an invasive plant spreads into a natural habitat, it can have long lasting impacts. Species like periwinkle, goutw**d, English ivy, and lily of the valley can take over and form dense monocultures that crowd out other plants, including native species that pollinators and wildlife depend on. 🐝🦋

When purchasing plants for your garden, avoid plants that are invasive in your area and consider native plants instead. Follow this link for gardening resources to help keep your garden healthy: https://bit.ly/4t1k1bl

Many invasive plants begin growing earlier in spring than native species, giving them a head start in competing for light, space, and nutrients. Early‑emerging invasives to watch for include goutw**d, periwinkle, garlic mustard, and yellow archangel.

Maple trees are culturally and economically important in North America. In Canada, they support industries like maple syrup production. The country produces 70% of the world’s maple syrup, contributing hundreds of millions to the economy.🍁

However, they are vulnerable to pests like the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), which prefers maples as hosts and can cause irreversible damage. Maple trees take around 40 years to mature before they can be tapped for sap, if an infestation occurs it will take decades for the industry to recover.

Early detection is critical. Report any sightings of ALB to the CFIA or EDDMapS immediately. While ALB has been eradicated from previous outbreaks, monitoring helps prevent it from returning.

Preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species is crucial, even during winter activities on the water. To help protect our waterways, always clean, drain, and dry your ice fishing equipment, including rods, augers, and footwear, before moving to a new location. Be sure to remove any visible plants, mud, or debris and thoroughly drain water from all equipment.

Freezing temperatures do not eliminate invasive species, so it's essential to stay vigilant. By following these simple practices, you can help preserve aquatic ecosystems and prevent the spread of harmful species year-round.
