We have the fortunate opportunity to care for some incredible properties. This expansive estate home has been under our stewardship for the last two years. Outside of the formal lawn areas is an expansive bush-meadow and trail system.

Adam C.E. Braun, CLHT, FLP just did a post about some of the plants found here — Sumac, Dogwood, Parasol Aster, Goldenrod, New England Aster. The colours are stunning.

Properties like this are also a good example of why our approach to Property Care is a little different. There are acres of lawn to mow, gardens to tend and trails to maintain — but there are also acres where knowing what not to do is just as important.

A meadow doesn’t need to look like a lawn. Goldenrod and Asters aren’t weeds that need to be cleaned up. Sumac and Dogwood aren’t necessarily brush that needs to be cleared. They’re part of a plant community that provides food, shelter and habitat while creating an incredible transition between the maintained landscape and the surrounding countryside.

Caring for properties like this requires more than keeping things tidy. It requires curiosity, an understanding of the landscape, and a relationship with our clients built on trust. That trust gives us the opportunity to care for these places as complete landscapes — not just a collection of maintenance tasks…

What is going on here!?!?

Well, it’s the first step in the sheet mulching process.

Sheet mulching is a method of suppressing weeds by covering the soil rather than digging everything out. You can also use sheet mulching to smother turf grass and prepare for a new garden bed. In this case, we’re working with an existing garden bed that had become particularly inundated with weeds. Instead of spending hours digging, pulling and disturbing the soil — only to have many of those weeds return — we’re taking a different approach.

First, we lay down a layer of cardboard, overlapping the pieces to create a barrier that blocks light and suppresses the weeds underneath. Next, we’ll apply a thick layer of shredded pine mulch. Then we’ll build the new planting bed right on top.

And yes, that’s cardboard. Clean cardboard (free of tape, labels, and heavy inks) that might otherwise have entered the waste or recycling stream is getting a second life right here in the garden ♻️…

We’re heavily exploring the next stage of our growth and what it looks like for our team and the communities we serve.

You already know us for our fierce commitment to sustainability and our focus on improving community resilience. One of the ways we demonstrate this is through our use of battery-powered landscape maintenance equipment and robotic lawnmowers.

We’re leaning into the advancements in autonomous mowing, emissions-free property care, and off-grid, clean-energy charging.

Today we had Macadam Foy onsite with the Kress Voyager for a demonstration and a chance to get our hands on the technology, ask some hard questions, and see what’s possible.

We’re not interested in technology for technology’s sake. We’re interested in what happens when the right technology can help us build a better way of caring for the landscapes and communities we work in.

This is us exploring what’s next. 🌱…

We’re incredibly excited to welcome Bonnie Green— better known to many of you as The W**d Lady — to the Belleview Landscapes team!

Since 2017, Bonnie has been creating, caring for, and maintaining gardens throughout our community. If you’ve spent any time talking gardens online, chances are you’ve seen her name come up. She’s built an incredible reputation, and we’ve heard her recommended countless times by people looking for someone who really understands gardens.

Now, Bonnie is winding down The W**d Lady and joining Belleview full-time.

We’re thrilled to have her experience, knowledge, creativity, and passion for plants on our team. And we’re especially excited about what this means for our clients — bringing together Bonnie’s garden expertise with the broader landscape design, construction, and maintenance capabilities of Belleview.
