At Cormorant, powerline safety is integrated into our daily operations, not limited to a single week each year. Our crews work daily around energized overhead and underground infrastructure. These risks extend beyond our industry to all trades, contractors, and the public.

Many incidents result from a lack of awareness. Raising awareness about powerline dangers is central to our commitment to safety, education, and community protection.

To help prevent serious injury or fatal shock from powerline contact at home or work, follow these essential safety tips:

⚠️ Stay at least 3 metres from overhead powerlines. You do not need to touch a powerline to receive a deadly shock. If you are too close, electricity can arc to you or your tools. Maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres, roughly the length of a 10-step ladder.

⚠️ Stay at least 10 metres from downed powerlines. Always assume downed lines are energized, even if they do not arc or spark. If you see a downed line, call 911, keep at least 10 metres away (about the length of a school bus), and report it to the local electrical distribution company. Only a utility worker on-site can confirm when the power is off.

⚠️ Remove distractions. Distractions can be deadly. Before working near Powerlines, eliminate potential distractions, such as your phone, whether at home or on a job site.

⚠️Identify all nearby powerlines, including overhead and underground, before starting outdoor work. Before digging, contact Ontario One Call to locate utility-owned underground infrastructure.

Safety begins with awareness. Stay alert, be prepared, and take action to stay safe. Share these tips to help protect others.

This Earth Day 2026, our Environmental Coordinator, Rachael Contini, organized a Spring Cleaning drive to properly dispose of what too many of us quietly toss in the trash: batteries, electronics, and old clothing.

Here is why it matters:
♻️Recycling batteries prevents toxic materials like lead, cadmium, and mercury from leaching into our soil and water, reduces landfill pressure, and allows vulnerable metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel to be recovered and used in new batteries.

♻️Recycling electronics recovers valuable materials like copper, gold, silver, plastics, and glass for use in new products, while keeping harmful toxins out of our waterways and soil.

♻️Donating textiles supports a circular economy, conserves the water & energy needed to produce new garments, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and directly supports members of our local community.

We highly encourage everyone to properly dispose of these items correctly and responsibly.

Cormorant is committed to continual improvement and preservation of our environment. This Earth Day, we reaffirm that commitment to putting the planet first, because protecting our environment isn’t just part of our job, it’s our purpose.

Let's work together to create a cleaner environment for future generations.
