SUNDAY REFLECTION | WHEN THE SEASON CHANGES, SHOULD DEVELOPMENT STOP?
As outdoor soccer comes to an end and winter approaches, routines begin to change.
There are fewer games, different training environments, school commitments, and colder days. For many young athletes, the intensity of their soccer routine naturally shifts.
And that’s okay.
Development doesn’t mean pushing harder every day. It means knowing what the athlete needs at each stage.
The winter period can be an opportunity to strengthen the foundations that competition doesn’t always leave enough time to address.
Better movement mechanics.
Improved balance and coordination.
Greater strength and physical control.
More consistent technique.
Better habits, focus, and body awareness.
These qualities matter when the athlete returns to the pitch.
But meaningful development also requires balance. Recovery matters. So does managing the demands of school, club commitments, growth, and the physical load of the sport.
The goal isn’t to fill every available day with training.
The goal is to make the time spent training count.
For parents, this is an opportunity to look beyond the next game or tryout and ask a different question:
What does my child need to develop during this stage of their journey?
For athletes, it’s an opportunity to understand that progress isn’t always measured by goals, minutes played, or results.
Sometimes, the most valuable work happens when there is no game waiting at the weekend.
At AB’Ed Legacy, we believe development should be purposeful, individual, and adapted to the athlete’s needs — throughout the season and beyond it.
Because high performance isn’t built in a single season.
It’s built through the decisions, habits, and work that happen between seasons, too.
The season changes. The approach evolves. The purpose remains.
