With the heavy rain and high winds we're experiencing, some homeowners may notice water stains, dripping, or moisture appearing inside their homes and immediately assume they have a roof leak.
Sometimes that's the case. But not always.
When rain is driven by strong winds, water can be forced into areas that typically stay dry, including:
🌧️ Plumbing stack vents
🌧️ Chimneys and flashing
🌧️ Soffit and attic ventilation openings
🌧️ Wall and roof intersections
🌧️ Areas where flashing, seals, or caulking have deteriorated over time
What many homeowners don't realize is that water can travel a surprising distance before it becomes visible. A stain on your ceiling isn't always directly below where the water entered.
If you notice signs of water intrusion:
✔️ Take photos
✔️ Check your attic if it's safe to do so
✔️ Note where the water is appearing
✔️ Have the source properly inspected before assuming the roof is the problem
The combination of heavy rain and strong winds can expose vulnerabilities that may never show up during normal weather conditions.
If you've noticed signs of water intrusion during this storm, don't ignore them. The sooner the source is identified, the easier and less costly repairs can often be. If you'd like us to take a look, we're here to help.
