WASP, HORNET OR BEE? KNOW WHAT’S FLYING AROUND YOUR YARD!

Not every buzzing insect is the same! Knowing the difference can help you decide when to leave it alone and when to seek professional help.

Here’s how to tell them apart

BEES— Usually fuzzy, with thicker bodies; important pollinators that help our gardens thrive.

WASPS — Often have smooth, slender bodies with narrow waists and may build nests around eaves, sheds, and other structures.

HORNETS — A type of wasp that can build large nests and may defend the colony if disturbed.

See lots of insects entering and leaving one spot?** There may be a nest nearby. Keep your distance and avoid disturbing it.

XPeller Pest Control Solutions can help identify wasp activity and provide professional treatment options when needed.

🧵 Fabric, insulation, or soft household materials

💩 Small, dark mouse droppings nearby

🐭 Signs of chewing or gnawing

🏠 Hidden nests in attics, wall cavities, garages, and cupboards

Maple Bugs vs. Boxelder Bugs: Are They the Same Thing?
If you’ve heard someone call those black-and-orange bugs around their home “maple bugs,” while you call them “boxelder bugs,” there’s a simple answer:
They’re the same insect.
Maple bug is a regional name commonly used in parts of Alberta and Western Canada, while boxelder bug is the more widely recognized name across North America.
Both names refer to Boisea trivittata, which is known for:
- Black bodies with reddish-orange markings
- Fall swarming on warm exterior walls
- Entering homes through small gaps
- Gathering around sunny areas
- Being generally harmless to people and pets
- Becoming a nuisance when large numbers gather indoors
So, is there actually a difference?
No. The difference is the name, not the insect.
Our latest guide explains why this insect has two names, where the term “maple bug” comes from, and when large fall infestations may require professional control.

Signs You Have a Mouse Infestation — Not Just One Mouse
Seeing one mouse in your home doesn’t always mean you have an infestation. But when signs start appearing in multiple areas, it may indicate a much bigger problem.
Watch for these warning signs:
- Droppings in more than one room
- Scratching sounds from walls, ceilings, or different areas
- Mouse activity continuing after catching one mouse
- Fresh and older droppings appearing together
- Multiple nesting areas
- Grease marks along walls and travel paths
- Gnaw damage in different locations
- Signs appearing over several days or weeks
A single mouse can become a larger population when food, shelter, and easy entry points are available.
If you’re seeing mouse signs in more than one area of your home, a full inspection can help determine how extensive the activity really is.
Our latest guide explains how to tell the difference between one mouse and an established infestation, what signs to look for, and when professional treatment may be needed.

How to Get Rid of Mice: 4 Steps That Actually Matter
Found mouse droppings, scratching sounds, or gnaw marks in your home?
Setting a trap may catch a mouse, but it doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. If you don’t address how the mice are getting inside, new activity can return.
A complete mouse-control approach includes:
1. Confirm the activity
Check your kitchen, pantry, basement, garage, attic, and other areas for droppings, gnaw marks, and nesting material.
2. Remove food and clutter
Store food in sealed containers, clean crumbs and spills, secure garbage, and reduce clutter.
3. Trap existing mice
Place traps along walls and near confirmed activity areas, then monitor them regularly.
4. Seal entry points
Check around pipes, vents, foundations, garage doors, and exterior doors. Sealing these gaps is one of the most important steps to prevent mice from coming back.
Our latest guide explains the complete step-by-step process, how long it can take, and when it’s time to call a professional.

Mice in Your Garage? Here’s How to Get Rid of Them Safely
Your garage may seem separate from your home, but it can be one of the easiest places for mice to hide, nest, and eventually find their way indoors.
Common signs of mice in your garage include:
- Droppings near boxes, shelves, or walls
- Gnaw marks on cardboard, plastic, or stored items
- Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric used for nesting
- Musty odours
- Gaps around the garage door, pipes, vents, and wiring
- Mouse activity around vehicles that aren’t used often
Getting rid of mice takes more than setting a few traps.
You need to:
1. Find where mice are hiding
2. Remove food sources and clutter
3. Place traps along their travel routes
4. Check vehicles and storage areas
5. Seal the entry points they’re using
Our latest guide explains how to identify mouse activity in your garage, remove mice safely, and prevent them from coming back.
