Burdock…such a useful medicinal plant and a great insectary one too. Classified as a noxious w**d in Alberta and those prickles are definitely scary!

Nasturtiums are such a useful plant…both leaves and flowers are edible, they serve to attract alyssa’s from other plants...

On Monday, July 6th I will be giving a Free Yardsmart Talk through the Calgary Horticultural Society and the City of Calgary, from 6:00-7:30 at the Falconridge/Castleridge Community centre.
We will be talking how to Garden in Calgary's Climate and Managing the weather that gets thrown at Calgary gardeners which requires some ingenuity and a lot of know-how!
In this talk, we will discuss how you can mitigate the weather's effects on the garden through keeping moisture in our soil, sculpting our garden landscape, erecting barriers, and so much more:
-Weather trends and events to be knowledgeable about: wind, storms, hail, heat warnings, drought and even flooding;
- How much water do our gardens need for optimal growth;
-How to Conserve moisture in our soil;
-Preventing erosion;
-Windbreaks: wattle fences, trellises, fences, and berms;
-Physical barriers: floating row covers, poly tunnels, cold frames, hail netting, and insect netting; and
-Living walls: sunflowers and beans.
Light snacks will be provided!

It was very exciting to see the seeds from this Buffalo Bean plant developing near my bed at Land of Dreams. I will keep my eye on them and collect them when they are mature to grow on in the native garden bed at DDRC!
