We’re thrilled to share that our Brooklynn Style Brownstone townhouse has officially been approved and added to the City of Calgary’s Infill Fast Track Program (IFTP) Catalogue.

This program means the design is pre-approved for flat, typical 50’ x 120’ mid-block inner-city lots — helping streamline approvals and bring thoughtful housing to market faster.

With multiple projects already under construction and in various stages of permitting, we’re excited to bring the design quality and craftsmanship of our custom homes into the multi-unit space.

We understand how passionate the zoning debate is in the city we all love. Our goal is simple: create well-designed homes that respect the scale of existing neighbourhoods while providing high-quality housing options for Calgarians.

We’re excited to have all permits in place and to officially break ground on our first Brooklyn-style townhouse in Killarney!

A big thanks to our first client and investor, Dan from Eisner Residential Corp., who challenged us to create a multi-family design that aligns with Calgary’s new zoning initiatives, fits seamlessly into established communities, and delivers lasting architectural and construction quality.

With several more projects set to launch later this summer and fall, we’re just getting started—and yes, we’re ready for a few more gold shovel moments.

The stairs in a custom home are always an opportunity to showcase the design style. Over the years, we’ve worked on many different stair and railing combos—from glass and stainless steel, to glass with custom brass stand-offs, to wood screens (lots of wood screens). But we’re really loving the classic and timeless nature of the stairs and railings at our recently completed Mount Royal project.

How can you not be romantic about this business?

I started Rectangle Design in 2005, and this year we’re celebrating a major milestone—20 years.

I grew up around construction. My dad ran a plumbing company, and my brother and I were always surrounded by tools. My father is incredibly clever—a true problem solver—and even in retirement, he’s still making and tinkering. When we were in elementary school, he had to start locking the garage—otherwise, we’d have every tool dragged out to build treehouses or skateboard ramps. The apple doesn’t fall far…

As a young man, I worked at one of Calgary’s oldest and most respected contracting firms, Trotter & Morton. I was lucky to be mentored by some of the toughest, sharpest, most old-school dudes in the business. Around the same time, my wife Nilo and I were flipping homes and falling in love with design during the mid-century modern comeback.

Then we landed our first client. While Nilo was eight months pregnant, I left Trotter & Morton and started Rectangle Design. That first project was featured in the Globe & Mail, Calgary Herald, Avenue, and Western Living. Those articles put us on the map and launched the business.

The name Rectangle? It was actually gifted to me. My brother Craig was living in Montreal, working at an ad agency, and he and a few colleagues came up with the bilingual name Rectangle for a freelance studio. When that idea fizzled out, the name came my way. Craig even designed our original logo, which we still use today—20 years later.

As a blue-collar kid, I never imagined the people I’d meet or the trust we’d earn. Nearly 200 projects later, it still feels personal. Clients become friends. You see them at the grocery store, a Flames game, or a patio on 17th Ave.

Cowtown backs people who roll up their sleeves. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to meet and collaborate with some incredible entrepreneurs across all kinds of industries—and I’m proud to be part of that community. Now, with our son Marcel preparing to join the business, I’m more excited than ever for what’s next.

The en suite, the primary bathroom, or dare I risk being a little politically incorrect and call it the master bathroom — whatever you want to call it, this bathroom just off the largest bedroom in the house where Mom and Dad sleep in our Mount Royal project is incredible!
