Is your garage door still secure during a power outage?

In most cases, yes. A power outage stops an electric garage door opener from operating, but it does not normally unlock your garage door. If the door is fully closed and the opener is properly engaged, it should remain secured.

Here’s what Calgary homeowners should know:

Your opener stays engaged: Without electricity, the motor stops working, but the door doesn’t automatically disconnect or unlock.

You can operate it manually: Most garage door openers have an emergency release cord inside the garage. Pulling it disconnects the opener so you can manually raise or lower the door.

Only use the emergency release when the door is fully closed. If a spring or cable is damaged, releasing an open door could cause it to fall unexpectedly.

A healthy garage door should lift smoothly: Springs counterbalance the door’s weight. If the door feels unusually heavy, uneven, stuck, or difficult to move, don’t force it. You may have a spring, cable, or balance issue.

Battery backup helps: Some garage door openers can continue operating temporarily during an outage with a backup battery.
