🔨 Cedar roofs do not always age evenly.

This section of ridge capping needed focused attention, while the surrounding roof could remain in place.

These photos show the worn cap and the repair underway: new ice-and-water membrane beneath new cedar cap shingles.

🏠 This is why we look at the actual condition before recommending a scope. Sometimes the right answer is a focused repair, not replacing everything around it.

☀️ A little flat-roof progress for your Sunday.

These photos were taken partway through the cap-sheet stage, with about half of the property completed.

Flat roofing can look pretty simple from a distance, but there is a lot happening in the details. The seams need to stay consistent, and the areas around vents, stacks and edges all need careful attention.

You can see a thin line along the finished seams called bleed-out. Keeping that consistent is one of the things the crew watches while the membrane is being installed.

It is not the flashiest part of a roofing project, but this steady, detailed work is what brings the whole roof together.

☀️ Happy Friday, Calgary.

We do not want to consider the possibility that summer might be ending either. Unfortunately, Mr. Doom and Gloom is here with a reminder: fall tends to arrive faster than we think. 🍂

If you already know your roof needs attention, this weekend is a good time to take the first step. Look things over safely from the ground, gather any photos you have and book an inspection or repair earlier rather than later.

Waiting for colder, wetter weather can make scheduling and repairs less flexible.

🏠 Not every concern means the entire roof needs replacing. A proper inspection may find that a focused repair is enough to keep things protected.

🌙 One for the evening scroll: a roof leak is not always as obvious as it looks.

On this roof, the leak was traced to shingles beginning to curl behind the air vent. Because this section has very little slope, water was not moving cleanly around the vent. Instead, it was working its way back inside.

🏠 Roofing techniques can change depending on the roof slope and the type of vent being installed. A detail that performs properly on a steeper roof may need different preparation or waterproofing on a low-slope section.

📸 This is also why a couple of photos cannot always tell the whole story. Photos are helpful, but finding the actual entry point often means getting onto the roof, examining the surrounding details and following the path the water is taking.

🍂 We know we talk about gutter cleaning a lot. There is a reason.

🏠 A roof is not “set it and forget it.” Regular maintenance is one of the simplest things you can do to help prevent avoidable water problems.

🌧️ This gutter is packed with pinecones, needles and twigs. When debris prevents water from reaching the downspout, it can back up and overflow.

✅ Check and clean gutters and eavestroughs in the spring and fall, and after periods of heavy debris. Gutter guards can reduce buildup, but they still need to be checked and maintained.

🪜 If the gutter is not safely accessible, leave the climbing to someone properly equipped.

🌧️ Switching from wood shakes to asphalt shingles can change how quickly rainwater seems to reach the gutters.

Wood shakes have a rougher, more absorbent surface and can retain some moisture. Asphalt shingles generally shed water more directly. A properly maintained gutter and downspout system should normally handle ordinary rainfall.

⛈️ Very intense cloudbursts are different. One overflow during a rare storm is not the same as gutters overflowing regularly.

🔎 If overflow happens during ordinary rain, or keeps happening, it is worth checking gutter size and pitch, downspout capacity, blockages, valleys, and places where runoff becomes concentrated.
