When I first started in refrigeration and HVAC, the industry was simple.

R11.
R12.
R22.
R502 for low temp.

That was basically it.

Every contractor stocked the same stuff. Every mechanic knew the pressures, oils, charging methods, recovery procedures, and troubleshooting. You could train apprentices properly because the entire industry was largely on the same page.

Now?

Every manufacturer has their own refrigerant.
Different oils.
Different glide temperatures.
Different pressures.
Different recovery procedures.
Different sensors.
Different controls.
Different leak requirements.
Different mildly flammable “A2L” refrigerants.

The back of a refrigeration van today looks like a chemistry experiment compared to 30 years ago.

I understand the environmental reasons behind some of the changes, but from the contractor side it’s become a complete cluster for service, inventory, training, and long-term maintenance.

The old refrigerants like R12 and R22 worked incredibly well technically. They were stable, forgiving, efficient, and easy on equipment. The industry lost a lot of standardization when we moved away from them.

Good thing I’m 65. I feel for the younger guys trying to keep up with all this madness.
