Calgary roofs age faster than most homeowners expect, and the reasons go beyond just age.
Chinooks swing temperatures by 20°C in hours. Freeze-thaw cycles force water under shingles all spring and fall. Calgary is one of Canada's most hail-prone cities. And at 1,045 metres above sea level, UV exposure is stronger than manufacturers' estimates account for.
The result? Asphalt shingles that last 25 years elsewhere often last closer to 15–20 here. Cedar shake struggles even more.
Watch for these warning signs that your roof is aging faster than expected:
🔴 Granules collecting in your eavestroughs or on the ground below your downspouts
🔴 Shingles that are curling at the edges or buckling in the middle
🔴 Moss or algae growth, especially on north-facing slopes
🔴 Water stains on your ceiling after rain or snowmelt
The good news? Regular maintenance makes a real difference. Annual inspections, clear eavestroughs, prompt repairs, and proper attic ventilation can all add years to your roof's life.
