🔥 Fire Advisory in effect for Calgary

Due to ongoing high temperatures and dry conditions, the risk of grass and wildfires has increased. A fire advisory is now in effect across Calgary.

While no restrictions are currently in place, everyone is asked to use extra caution when using fire pits, barbeques, campfires and other open flames.

💧 Keep a water source nearby, never leave fires unattended, and fully extinguish them when you're done.
🚬 Dispose of smoking materials responsibly.
🔥 Keep fire pits at least three metres from property lines and combustible materials.

Small actions can help prevent a wildfire and keep our communities safe.

Its a beautiful day out. We are heading out to Nanton for a much needed vacation then to Water Valley to check on the cute chickens and the garden. Before leaving I tossed together this arrangement with flowers in bloom in the garden for my mom. I went with a more natural flow.

One garden at a time... we're reclaiming this property from horsetail! 🌱💪

Horsetail is one of the toughest plants we deal with in Alberta gardens. Its deep underground rhizomes make it incredibly persistent, so this is no quick fix, but the difference is already incredible.

Stay tuned for the final reveal after a fresh layer of mulch! 👀🐝

🦟 Is it just us, or are the mosquitoes absolutely relentless this year?

Working in gardens, especially shady ones, has been a challenge! After spending hours outside every day, here are a few things that have actually helped us:

🌿 Mosquito spray: Surprisingly, the heavy-duty DEET sprays haven't worked very well for us this season. We've actually had better luck with some of the more citrus-based repellents, although they still need to be reapplied regularly.

🕯️ Citronella candles: When it's safe to do so, we light a citronella candle while we're working. Just remember never to leave a candle unattended and always extinguish it before moving on.

👕 Protective clothing: I picked up a mesh bug jacket with a head cover from Dollarama, and it's been a lifesaver! Wearing light-coloured clothing also seems to help.
