We've worked on the same Calgary home three times now.
First call: chimney repointing. Mortar had deteriorated on the top section, crown was starting to crack. Standard repair, done properly, cured before winter. End of job.
Second call, 14 months later: the stone retaining wall at the front of the property. Different problem, different material, same homeowner. She'd seen how we'd left the chimney, joints clean, no mess, exactly what we'd described in the estimate and when the retaining wall started showing movement in the lower courses, we were the first call.
Third call, eight months after that: her neighbor had watched us work on the retaining wall from across the street and asked for our number. The homeowner called to pass on our information and mentioned she also wanted us to look at the parging on her foundation while we were in the area.
Three calls. Three different jobs. One property.
And a referral to the neighbor that became its own job.
We don't run ads. We don't do flyers. Every new client we've taken on in the last two years has come from someone who already knows our work, either directly or one person removed.

This one isn't about how the chimney looked. It's about what was getting into the house.
The homeowner called us for what they thought was a cosmetic issue, some cracking on the exterior brick and a crown that had seen better days. Aesthetic stuff. They weren't in a rush.
When we got up there, we found the flue liner had cracked along a section about 40 centimeters long. Not catastrophic-looking. Not the kind of thing that would register as serious from the outside.
But a cracked flue liner means combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, have a path into the wall cavity and potentially into the living space rather than being drawn up and out of the chimney the way they're supposed to be.
This family used a gas fireplace. Not constantly, but regularly. Every time that fireplace ran, whatever wasn't going straight up the flue had somewhere else to go.
We don't know how long the liner had been cracked. The homeowner didn't either. The chimney had passed a visual inspection from the ground the previous spring.
We repaired the liner, rebuilt the crown, repointed the exterior. Straightforward masonry work. The kind of job that doesn't look dramatic in photos.
But this is the one we think about when someone asks why chimney inspections matter.
Before you light your fireplace this fall, get someone up on that roof. Not because the chimney looks bad. Because you can't see a cracked liner from the ground, and you can't smell carbon monoxide at all.

Share the Ask Tony tuckpointing lifespan post natively in two Calgary homeowner groups. It's the most contractor-evaluating content of the month, it gives homeowners a framework for assessing any mason they're considering, which makes it genuinely useful in a community context. Intro text:

"How long does tuckpointing last in Calgary's climate?"
This is a question worth asking every contractor who quotes you, because the honest answer separates the ones who do it properly from the ones who don't.
Done properly: 20 to 30 years. Sometimes longer on a well-protected wall.
Done poorly: 5 to 7 years. Sometimes less.
The difference between those two outcomes comes down to three things.
Mortar mix. The replacement mortar has to match the hardness of the existing brick or stone. If you use a mortar that's harder than the brick, which is common with modern pre-mix mortars, the brick becomes the sacrificial layer instead of the mortar. The brick starts spalling. That's a much more expensive problem than deteriorated mortar joints.
Rake depth. The old mortar needs to be raked out to a minimum of 20mm before new mortar goes in. Less than that and the bond surface isn't sufficient, the new mortar looks fine, passes a scratch test, and starts pulling away from the brick within a few freeze-thaw cycles.
Application temperature. Mortar cures, it doesn't just dry. Curing requires stable temperatures above 5°C for a minimum of 48 hours after application. Tuckpointing done too late in the Calgary fall or on a day that drops below 5°C overnight, hasn't cured properly. It'll fail faster than mortar that was never there.
When you're getting quotes, ask each contractor: what mortar mix are you using and how does it compare to my existing masonry? How deep are you raking? What's the temperature forecast for curing time?
If they can't answer those questions on the spot, that tells you something.
