Walls are where consolidation matters most. Concrete has to work its way down through rebar and tight forms, and if it doesn’t get vibrated properly, you get voids and honeycombing hiding inside the pour. You won’t see it until the forms come off — and by then it’s a repair, not a fix.

So every section gets worked. Every lift gets vibrated. No shortcuts on the part nobody will ever see.

Acreage jobs are a different animal. You’re well outside the city, often down a gravel road, on a site with its own soil conditions and its own access challenges. A drum truck loses the clock on the drive out — by the time it arrives, the concrete has been turning for over an hour and the working window is half gone.

Most of the industry is wrapping up for the day. Our crew is just hitting stride — cribbing set, mix pour out of the Omega Ready Mix trucks, Omega 2000 placing and finishing while the light holds.

Pours don’t always land at 8 a.m. Sometimes the schedule says late afternoon, and the concrete doesn’t care what time it is. It cares that the crew shows up ready, the mix is right, and the finish gets the time it needs.

That’s how a 120-day schedule stays a 120-day schedule.

Garage slabs on a multi-family build.

Multiple units means multiple garages, and every one of them has to match. Same elevation. Same slope to the door. Same finish. A homeowner comparing their garage to their neighbour’s shouldn’t be able to tell which slab got poured first.

These slabs take real abuse too. Vehicle loads, road salt dripping off tires all winter, freeze-thaw cycles, and whatever gets dropped on them. So the mix is built for it — right MPa for the load, air entrainment for Alberta winters, and control joints cut on time so the slabs crack where we plan, not where they want.

Corner lots come with their own set of problems. Two street frontages, setbacks on both sides, sidewalk and curb tight to the forms, and usually a neighbour whose fence is closer than anyone would like. Getting trucks positioned and concrete placed takes planning before the first yard moves.

That’s where the volumetric trucks earn their keep. Multiple chutes, flexible reach, mix made on site — we put concrete where the lot allows, not just where a fixed chute can reach.
