How did that move? We did it.

For this operation, a 200-foot-long, 300-ton bridge needed to be moved into position over an active section of Highway 1 in Burnaby.

To execute the move, we used self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) — specialized heavy transport equipment built to move massive, complex loads with control and stability.

SPMTs were the clear choice:
• High-capacity transport for extreme loads
• Configurable for oversized and irregular structures
• Self-powered and remotely controlled for precise movement on site

Every hour, millions of dollars worth of goods move through the Burnaby corridor on Highway 1, connecting Vancouver to industries, communities, and supply chains across Canada.

When critical infrastructure and major transportation corridors are on the line, experience matters.

Apex, a Norland Company, has been moving heavy payloads across Western Canada for more than 60 years. Our clients rely on our expertise, specialized equipment, and proven track record to execute complex work safely and precisely.

On Vancouver Island, our team is delivering a new water and wastewater system for the Malahat Nation. We're proud to be part of an important infrastructure project that will support the community for years to come.

It’s a large, complex project, delivered in collaboration with the Malahat Nation and project partners in an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model. Through this method, we’re uniting different project expertise and the community into one team with a shared goal.

Together, we're delivering:
- New water treatment plant with 2 new reservoirs
- New wastewater treatment plant
- 2 lift stations
- 3 water wells
- A new Pressure Reducing Valve station
- Over 8 km of piping and associated site works
- New access road construction

📽️ Take a look at what’s shaping up on site.

What does it take to build in Canada’s far North? It starts with access.

Project sites can be more than 3,000 km from the nearest major city, with no year-round road access. Every phase of work depends on careful logistical planning and narrow seasonal windows.

For a limited 3-month period each year, when sea ice clears, sealift provides a critical window to deliver heavy equipment intact, along with essential materials and supplies for Northern communities.

Air access is available year-round, but it can be costly. Large equipment—like 25,000 kg rock drills —must be disassembled, transported in segments aboard specialized transport craft such as the Hercules, and reassembled on site.

Aside from these, options are limited, and delays can be costly.

Glacier specializes in blasting and shoring projects in these environments, where success depends as much on logistics and planning as it does on technical ex*****on.

Our teams understand how to navigate complex ground conditions, extreme climates, and remote access, while working in partnership with the communities who steward the land.

In the North, the margin for error is small.
Experience makes the difference.

Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we pause to remember the workers who have been injured, fallen ill, or lost their lives on the job.

At Norland, everybody owns safety. It's embedded in every project, from planning in the office to building in the field. We believe that identifying hazards, speaking up, and looking out for one another is a part of being in a team you can trust. It’s committing to a culture where every person has the mindset and the tools to work safely.

Today and every day, we pause, reflect, remember, and renew our commitment to preventing workplace tragedies.

Massive girders. Active railway. Precision ex*****on.

The team at BEL Contracting, part of the Aecon – Gateway Infrastructure Group General Partnership, has successfully completed the second phase of girder installations for the Holdom Avenue Overpass in Burnaby.

When complete, the bridge will feature 9 spans with 8 girders per span—each girder measuring 40 m long and 1.6 m high, and weighing 53,000 kgs.
To minimize disruption, these massive precast concrete NU girders were transported overnight and carefully installed over an active railway in a tight urban corridor.

NTI, another Norland company, supported the technical industrial rigging and hoisting—helping execute each lift with precision.

Close coordination between the project team and the railway ensured operations continued safely, with trains running smoothly throughout.

Huge credit to the project team who adapted to changing timelines, worked evenings, and delivered this phase safely and on schedule.

Construction shapes the world around us, and that’s not a responsibility we take lightly. Because we can’t Build to Last if we’re not building responsibly.

For Earth Day, we’re recognizing our role in building a more sustainable future. Across our teams, environmental responsibility is built into every part of our processes. Whether it’s through emissions tracking or environmental risk mitigation, we work to reduce our impact while delivering the infrastructure communities depend on.

It’s not an easy task, but it's worthwhile. It takes careful planning, strong environmental practices, proactive thinking, and, of course, great people who care about the work they do. And that’s exactly what we bring to every project.

Moving big stuff takes serious coordination.

Norland's team at Apex recently delivered 63 huge cable reels from the port at Duke Point (near Nanaimo) to multiple sites across Victoria—each one measured 4.45m wide and 4.45m high and weighed 37 metric tonnes. Moving these reels one at a time meant hauling oversized loads a combined 7000 kms over busy highways and roads, requiring 3 pilot vehicles for each trip.

Apex handled the full scope: permitting, route planning, and ex*****on. That meant coordinating with multiple municipalities, the province, and utility partners to move this cargo safely and efficiently. Congratulations to the team who completed the project safely and on time!

We're proud to support power distribution projects in BC that keep communities and businesses running.
