You finally get the keys to your Southern Ontario new build… and realize it looks exactly like every other house on the street.
After 25+ years in renovations and landscaping, my advice is simple: don’t rush into a massive renovation. The biggest impact comes from upgrading the details builders skip.
🏡 Start with landscaping.
A custom walkway, upgraded steps, and architectural lighting can instantly transform curb appeal and make a builder-grade home feel custom.
✨ Add character with trim and carpentry.
Feature walls, crown moulding, board-and-batten, deeper baseboards, or even arched doorways add personality without the cost of a full remodel.
🔥 Create an outdoor room.
Before building a deck, fix grading issues and design a patio space you’ll actually use. Outdoor kitchens, fire features, and interlock patios add functional living space and value.
đź’ˇ Upgrade your lighting.
Builders place lights where it’s easiest, not where it looks best. Under-cabinet lighting, dimmers, feature lighting, and upgraded fixtures completely change the mood of a home.
⚡ Controversial opinion:
A white kitchen can be beautiful, but it needs contrast. Change at least one element: countertops, backsplash, lighting, flooring, or decor. The kitchen should feel like YOUR home, not the builder’s model.
You don’t need to change everything. Focus on the details, add your personality, and your home will feel custom.
