If your grass is still feeling the effects of this summer's heat, don't worry, because fall is the best time to help it recover.
Here's your step-by-step guide to get things back on track before winter:
- Keep watering (deeply!): Even with cooler temps, your lawn needs about 1" of water per week, especially if it's still brown or crunchy. Water deeply 1-2 times a week rather than daily sprinkles to encourage strong root growth.
- Raise your mower height: Taller grass shades the soil and keeps it cooler. Aim for a 3"mowing height and keep your blades sharp to avoid tearing drought-stressed turf.
- Hold off on reseeding (for now): If the lawn is still dormant or struggling, wait until consistent moisture returns. Otherwise, new seed may dry out or fail to germinate.
- Skip the dethatching: Thatch can protect dry lawns by retaining moisture. Wait until spring to dethatch if necessary.
- Aerate compacted soil: If your lawn feels hard underfoot, fall is a great time to aerate and improve water and nutrient absorption.
- Use the right fertilizer: Choose a fall fertilizer with higher potassium (the “K” in N-P-K). It helps roots recover and strengthens your lawn ahead of winter. Our fertilizer package clients don't need to worry about this one; it's already on the schedule!
- Keep foot traffic low: Avoid walking or parking on stressed areas to prevent further damage to weakened grass.
- Be patient: A drought-damaged lawn takes time to regrow. With the right care now, it'll come back stronger in spring.
