Most people think aeration is just poking holes in your lawn. Here are 5 things you might not know about aerating your lawn in the fall.

Those little soil plugs all over your lawn after aeration? Leave them. They break down and feed your grass; they shouldn't be raked up after.

You don't need to aerate every single year. Most lawns only need it every 1 to 3 years, unless you have heavy clay soil or a lot of foot traffic.

Not all aeration is equal. Spike aeration (just poking holes) can actually make compaction worse over time. Core aeration pulls real plugs of soil out, which is the method that we use for our clients.

The real magic happens if you double it up with additional lawn care. Overseeding or fertilizing while those holes are still open gets everything to the roots instead of sitting on top of the lawn and hoping for rain.

It's supposed to look a little rough for a couple of weeks. Your lawn is recovering and getting stronger. Once your aeration is complete, leave it alone to recover and avoid too much foot traffic.
