SMART SHOX SUSPENSION FLASH - ***NEW*** STAGE 2.0 !
We are super excited to announce the release of this addition to Accelerated Technologies' original Suspension flash for the Ski-Doo KYB SMART SHOX equipped snowmobiles from BRP. Created in partnership with PRECISION EFI who's help allowed us the ability to access and flash the Suspension ECU. We are jointly offering this new advanced flash.
QUICK REVIEW OF the original STAGE 1.0 released in 2024:
We implemented these following improvements over stock:
COMFORT MODE / SKI SHOCKS - Ski shocks were WAY TOO SOFT stock. We firmed this mode up so that it is usable at a moderate trail pace. We also increased the rebound damping to better 'hold on to' the ski at this new pace.
SPORT MODE / SKI SHOCKS - Stock, this mode was barely firmer than COMFORT mode, we bumped it up a moderate but noticeable amount over Comfort Mode with Stage 1.0. We also adjusted the spread of damping at different shaft speeds to better match the rear. (keeping the sled flatter as you flipped through the modes).
SPORT + / SKI SHOCKS - Stock, this mode was massively strong, too strong for the trail. It seemed the supplier was going for shock value here and overshot the mark for trail riding. We softened this mode at some (shock) velocities so it was far more usable by the average aggressive rider, but retained the BIG hit protection. Basically just a bit firmer than SPORT mode.
COMFORT MODE / REAR - Again, like the front we found this mode to be too soft to be usable. We firmed up the low speed damping fairly significantly to keep the sled up in the top of the travel as that is where the R Motion X skidframe gives best comfort. We also boosted the rebound slightly to hold on to a kicking sensation the sled had on bigger hits.
SPORT MODE / REAR - Stock this mode was ever so slightly firmer than Comfort mode. We bumped it up primarily at low speed to give a 'sportier' feel, but noticeably firmer than Comfort Mode.
SPORT + MODE / REAR - In a similar trend to the Skis, we found this mode to be too firm to be very usable in the bumps with a HUGE problem in the rebound damping that we corrected.
STAGE 1.0 OVERVIEW:
The above fixes were (and will remain) available as Stage 1.0 for $599 Cdn. We recommend the correct Torsion springs (see charts on our Website) and an optional compression k**b installed on the rear shock to tune the compression damping manually (in addition to the mode selected) to give even more rear shock control. Up front we recommend our Dual Rate Ski shock spring kit to better match the R Motion X skid out back by making the front suspension Progressive. IT IS NOT mandatory for the tune at all, we just find the sled handles flatter and stays better balanced.
SUSPENSION FLASH -STAGE 2.0 ***NEW***
We were excited to update our first version after 2 years of LEARNING and testing with our ELKA shock packages on non-SMART SHOX equipped machines. The ELKA shocks give us unbelievable control with low speed, high speed and rebound damping control. We have tested a new theory of valving on the Elka shocks with incredible results, and we applied this knowledge to our SMART SHOX SUSPENSION FLASH Stage 2.0. During testing, we data logged with our onboard telemetry data logger on the Elka machines AND have been data logging on the Smart Shox Sleds as well. We were so excited to apply this new 'loop' of knowledge to the SMART SHOX Stage 2.0 flash.. With the engineers at PRECISION EFI, we would develop a "target" group of shock settings on the Shock Dyno, then ride it on trail with our test riders, then debrief our ride recording our detailed impressions. We then look at the data from the ride to close the 'loop' begun at the dyno. We then ensured the sled stayed flat and balanced as we progressed up through the 3 modes with nice steps on each setting as the dyno alone does not ensure this. No more Goldilocks settings of WAY TOO SOFT and WAY TOO FIRM. We improved the compression and rebound balance with the help of the data to give us an incredibly comfortable, flat, predictable, fun snowmobile.
COMFORT MODE / SKI SHOCKS Stage 2.0***NEW*** - We made this mode a little firmer than Stage 1.0 holding the sled up in the top of the travel where comfort lives. We learned that at times, firmer means more comfortable due to the ride height maintaining more travel below. We also spent a ton of time making the rebound 'progressive' to better match the spring push (especially with the dual rate springs). This improves comfort AND grip from the skis, giving us an elevated level of safety and carbide traction that we didn't know was even possible.
SPORT MODE / SKI SHOCKS Stage 2.0 ***NEW*** - Same theories applied above, just 10% stronger with upgraded progression through the stroke which helps the ski stay dug into the snow at all positions. For example we have the rebound stronger when the spring is pushing harder (from deep in the travel) and slowly back off the rebound as the spring relaxes and the shock slows down. This keeps incredibly even 'push' of the ski into the trail.
SPORT + MODE / SKI SHOCKS Stage 2.0 ***NEW*** - Same as above, just approx 10% stronger again. Reminder SPORT and SPORT + have an auxiliary map that adds damping to the outside ski as the bar is progressively turned. We have logged at least 5 increases in damping between bars - straight and 20 degrees of bar angle. This works like a 'progressive' sway bar to help keep the sled flatter when ridden aggressively in the corners
COMFORT MODE / REAR SHOCK Stage 2.0 ***NEW*** - We spent a tremendous amount of time on the rear shock in Stage 2.0. We found (even with Stage 1.0) that the rear shock was very sensitive to damping progression when coupled with the rising rate linkage of the R Motion X skid. The shock had the tendency to be soft in the top of the travel, then try to stop right around half travel as the damping firmed up, which would manifest itself with the rider crushing into, then getting ejected out of, the seat. The good news is that it would hardly ever bottom, but it definitely left some comfort to be desired. For Stage 1.0 we 'flattened' the damping curve as best we could, but this tendency still existed which we controlled with elaborate rebound. For Stage 2.0, WE WORKED WITH OTHER AUXILIARY MAPS THAT WERE ADDING DAMPING DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION. In layman's terms the compression damping was getting firmer on throttle opening (acceleration) performing an anti-squat function. With our heightened expectations of comfort, we worked on these auxiliary maps that affect the base damping map to allow us to use much more travel... Which means increased comfort AND bump capability.
SPORT MODE / REAR SHOCK Stage 2.0 ***NEW*** - We applied the same fixes as in Comfort mode and also adjusted the SHOCK LENGTH BASED DAMPING curve which was adjusting the base damping dependent on the position of the shock. We also embraced and incorporated the braking map and it's effect on rebound damping. This map controls the pitch forward during corner entry. We polished this one too.
SPORT + MODE / REAR SHOCK Stage 2.0 ***NEW*** - Same improvements as with the above maps, just stronger with enhanced auxiliary map control. Carefully balanced to the SPORT + Ski maps to ensure the sled stays incredibly flat through the corners. Our Dual Rate Ski and Dual Rate Pro 40 Centre shock spring kit helps optimize these improvements even more.
SUMMARY STAGE 2.0 - Basically, we incorporated base damping improvements that we have discovered in the last 2 years during thousands of shock dyno runs coupled with what we have learned data logging on the Smart Shox machines. Even more importantly, we are utilizing the MORE ADVANCED MAP CAPABILITIES IN THE SMART SHOX MODULE. We leveraged and improved what makes the SMART SHOX.... SMART, by working with the more advanced maps within the Suspension Module. We greatly increased how much active travel is in the rear shock to give big boost in comfort out back in all modes, while ensuring the sled stays 'flat' front to back regardless of which damping mode is selected. So, greater comfort AND greater performance in all modes.
STAGE 2.0 will be at a special release sale price of $799 Cdn or upgrades for $200 for existing owners of the Suspension Flash Stage 1.0. Again, we recommend the correct Torsion springs (see charts on our Website) and a compression k**b installed on the rear shock to tune the compression damping manually (in addition to the mode selected) to give even more personalized rear shock control. Up front we recommend our Dual Rate Ski shock spring kit to better match the R Motion X skid out back by making the front suspension progressive. IT IS NOT mandatory for the tune at all, we just find the sled handles flatter and stays better balanced.
Note: RAS RX owners. The Suspension flash is indeed the same for this latest front end, we just have an upgraded dual rate spring kit from Accelerated Technologies for the RAS RX that we developed to offset the leverage change from the new front spindles and flatter shock angle.
Note 2: We continue to remind everyone that the Smart Shox are incredibly hard on the OEM shock oil and we recommend getting the shocks serviced at the 3,000 - 5,000 km interval MAX by a reputable shock service centre with a vacuum bleeding machine.
Note 3: As before, the Flash Stage 2 will be available at Accelerated Technologies, Precision EFI or at participating Precision EFI dealers worldwide. Just like with a Precision EFI engine tune, the Suspension tunes can be flashed into the diagnostic port located by your right knee when seated on the sled. Optionally, the Suspension Module can be sent in and "bench flashed" at any of the partners named above. It can be located on the main frame rail under the hood, near the top of the left hand shock mount and it says KYB on it. Price is the same for either method of installation. 👍🤓
