Date Change!!!

The June Prairie Flower Market is now on June 27! This will allow more local flowers to bloom!

Unfortunately, I won't have any fresh flowers for a while, but I'll be fully stocked with stunning everlasting bouquets!

Also, if you need an everlasting bouquet outside of this market, you can get them at YXE Farmers’ Market + Artisanal Shop and Natural Wellness Store anytime!

This week in flowers...

Planting is FINALLY complete with the exception of sunflower successions for the next few weeks.

Everything is still behind, but now that it's all in the ground, I can stress less about it! At some point, there will be flowers.

I'm looking forward to some rain again this week- the wind can still take a hike as it's hard to run any sprinklers.

Now onto staking/supporting plants, staying up on watering and trying to do something about all the sow thistle!

You know what makes a great end of the school year gift for teachers? A locally grown everlasting flower bouquet. They can display it in their house and not have to worry about watering or taking care of it all summer! A great low maintenance gift!

This week in flowers...

The allium are blooming, but unfortunately my tulips have seen better days and I won't be harvesting them for sale this year. It's as good as solidified my decision to cut them out of the garden and focus on other things- like peonies- which I've ordered more of for fall planting!

Other perennials are growing quick and budding up though and I can't wait to see more color! The mint that I thought was killed by winter is indeed thriving and spreading. I sprayed the weeds yesterday while it was calm and sprayed a bit of the mint so time will tell if it holds it back from spreading further.

I managed to get the dahlias and glads planted, as well as my potatoes and onions (finally!). I'll be working on getting some plant supports out there the first chance I get! I have 15-20 trays left to plant out and if it stays calm and not super rainy, I'll be able to get them done before the weekend 🤞

What's up this week on the flower farm?

We have wind every spring, but I don't remember wind this bad for this many days, out of this direction! I've put planting more on hold until I'm confident my seeds won't blow away and the plant starts won't die in the wind. My snapdragons look very sad, but I think if the wind stops and I can actually get some meaningful water on them, they'll recover.

I keep losing hot caps to the wind, so hopefully what's sprouted underneath will survive! Much like last year, the wind has caused everything to have a bit of a lean to it 😅

The seeds are sprouting now though so hopefully that means the rest of the seeds that need to go in this week will come up quick! But it also means that the weeds are coming at me in full force! I actually am not sure how I'll be keeping up with them, but I might have to do some careful spraying if the wind stops.

We got the dahlia and glad rows ready, so now I can start planting the moment the forecast looks calmer! Devone made the rows with the skidsteer so I don't break my back for a whole day trying to dig holes for myself!

And while it was not on the spring schedule, we decided to try dig up some caraganas to put on the south end of the field. I couldn't plant but I also couldn't not do something on the weekend!

This week in flowers...

I had a really good weekend (I took Friday off work too) planting seeds and seedlings out. I'm probably 75% of the way through the 4 gardens, but need another week or two to finish getting the rest in, including the dahlias and glads in the field.

It looks like the heat and wind will be a little higher so I'll start the sprinklers soon so nothing roasts too bad in the heat.

Devone came home on Friday to start trenching a bigger water line in for me and once that's all hooked up, hopefully my hoses will look a little better 😅

I lost a few plants over the winter that I didnt expect to lose, but I guess thats what happens when winter is 9 months long. They weren't major contributors though, so I'm not losing any sleep over them.

Back to my day job for a few days this week and I'm glad because my feet need a break!

But for real, I couldn't do what I do without this man's help. Devone literally comes home for a few hours (when he's more than a couple hours away) to get equipment ready, hook up water, and help me with whatever I need. He's my fertilizer guy, my custom sprayer and my sounding board. He lets me take over every square inch of space in the yard, and might tease, but never complains.

I might be the face you see all the time, but he does a lot of the behind the scenes work. And he's going to be so unimpressed that I have this many photos... 😆

This week in flowers...

Now that I can get out and plant, I hope to give you a regular, weekly update that lives on my feed.

Right now there isn't much going on. I've direct planted some sweet peas, Bells of Ireland, bupleurum, larkspur, bachelor buttons and nigella.

The allium that I planted last fall, along with some perennials are the only green showing up, and the garlic looks to be surviving so far too.

As long as it stays dry, I'll be able to till the field and get more planted!

This is pretty lame so far and might be for the next few weeks, but soon enough there will finally be more green!

The next everlasting frame workshop is coming up soon, and this one is a big one! Three workshops in one day! All frames...
