Hillendale Perennials

We produce landscape perennials, potted herbs and salad greens, & decorative Christmas Products. Hillendale Perennials is a landscape plant nursery specializing in container grown perennials (and potted herbs and salad greens). We are a retail production operation; hence all of the plants that we sell directly to our gardening customers are grown at our own farm which is located 5 km south of Trur

o, NS on the Truro Road. We do much of our own propagation. We also bring in seed and other propagation materials (crown divisions, rooted cuttings, etc.) We are constantly looking for new, hardy perennials and we offer perennials, both native to North America, and native to areas as far away as Siberia! We are located in a small inland valley which has colder winters (Zone 4b/5a) than Truro (Zone 5a/5b). We concentrate on the production of hardy perennials, which are in addition to being grown outdoors nine months of the year, are overwintered in unheated cold frames from early December to late March. We evaluate new varieties in our display gardens for performance and winter hardiness. We have a reputation for growing large, well established hardy plants which perform extraordinary well for our customers. We basically operate on a 2 year cycle. If you were to visit our nursery each week from early May to mid-August, over 2 seasons, you would be able to see most of the varieties that we produce for sale. At any given time there are between 150 to 350 perennial varieties typically available. Most are produced in large 3L, 4L and 6L nursery containers and are usually at least a growing season old and often 2 or 3 years old. The farm also produces other container-grown products, cut daffodils and decorative Christmas products (wreaths, drop swags, and planters). Hillendale Perennials sells perennials from the first of May to mid August. We sell at the Truro Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm, and also at our retail nursery in Hilden. We also do a limited number of perennial border designs and provide the plants for these projects. Landscapers, landscape architects, towns, cities, universities, etc. also purchase our perennials (at retail prices; we do not sell at wholesale prices). Our customer base at our nursery in Hilden comes from mainland Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick.
