We've already started getting calls for hose bibbs / hydrants / taps which have burst or been damaged after the particularly cold winter we just had.

To save some heartbreak, we recommend checking both inside and outside after restoring water to the hydrants, to ensure there's no leaks when they are turned on.
The reason? Frost free hydrants like the picture on the left close the water connection near the bottom where you can see the green line. If water was trapped inside the body of the hydrant during the freeze, the expanding ice makes the body burst (red circle). The leak isn't found until the water is turned back on and the tap is open.

This is a particular danger if a hose was attached over the winter, or if an interior valve fails AND the hydrant was left open or on over the winter. The picture on the right shows the warning that hoses should be removed to prevent burst damage from freezing.

If you are alone, you can hook up a hose and run it to somewhere away from the foundation, turn the hydrant on outside (there will be no water), then turn the water on inside and inspect the location where the hose bibb exits the house. If someone else is home, you can turn the inside valve on first, and have one person inside and one outside to inspect for leaks.

If a leak is found, use the inside shut off valve to turn the water back off. You are welcome to give us a call if you need assistance with repairs.

Let's talk water treatment.

Water treatment is installed to deal with problem water. Problems include issues such as hardness, iron, hydrogen sulphide, manganese, (and others!) but also microbiologically unsafe water. The treatment system recommended depends on your water and where you are.

Almost everyone in this area will benefit from having a water softener installed. Softening your water reduces wear and tear on water-using appliances and fixtures, and saves energy costs when you consider hot water generation.

Other water treatment concerns can create problems if left untreated. The recommended treatment depends on what is found on a water test.

There are two different levels of water test. Anybody on a well should do yearly sampling and testing offered by public health to test for microbiological safety. If the sample comes back as unsafe, a well maintained UV system is recommended. The second level of treatment is offered by companies like ours, and it tests for hardness, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide, tannins, chlorides, and pH. This testing determines what we recommend to treat your water.

This year we've already had a couple potential frozen pipe calls which have luckily resolved on their own. Here are some tips to deal with a potential frozen pipe situation. Enclosed spaces like cupboards or bulkheads on an outdoor wall seem to be particularly vulnerable to issues. Doors / access points should be opened up to allow warm air to pe*****te the space.

Call 613-661-7436 to book an appointment with our licensed plumber Mike. We offer service plumbing, water treatment, and drain cleaning.

Water treatment equipment is not maintenance free. Softeners need salt, filters need to be changed, and occasionally a service appointment is needed to keep equipment in tip-top shape. The filter on the top right in the picture was long overdue for service and needed a deep cleaning, as well as replacement of wear-and-tear parts. The salt bin in the middle needed to be emptied out, as the salt had turned into a large block. The bottom right picture shows a softener piston which was worn and needed replacement.

We are a Watergroup / Novo / Econoflo key dealer and we both sell and service their equipment.
