Thank you for your dedication to safe and responsible forestry operations. 🎉🎉

Last fall, WestFor in collaboration with NSCC Centre of Forest Innovation offered a 13 week Mechanized Forest Equipment Operator Program for the first time! The course was a great success and we’re very proud of all 6 graduates who worked hard to master the program.

Here are two of our graduates from the program now working in Halifax County. 🌲 We’re happy to welcome them to the woods and wish them nothing but the best as they begin their new careers in forestry with Fine Cuts Lawn Care, Landscaping & Excavation and WestFor!

Work has begun on a salvage operation on Crown land affected by the Long Lake wildfire. WestFor and Freeman Lumber are working closely with the Department of Natural Resources to safely recover sawable timber from the burned forest, supporting local mills and jobs across Nova Scotia.

This carefully planned work also prepares the site for reforestation, with enough organic material left on the ground to replenish soils impacted by the fire and support long-term forest renewal.

CBC recently visited the site to see the operation firsthand and share how this collaborative effort is benefiting Nova Scotians. Story link in comments.

Deer rifle season kicked off last Friday, and that means more hunters are out enjoying the woods, including areas where WestFor operates on Crown land.

To help keep everyone safe, our crews post “No Hunting” signs on roads leading to active operations. The provincial Hunting and Fur Harvesting Regulations also require hunters using a rifle or muzzleloader to stay 402 metres away from active woods operations.

We want to remind everyone to stay alert, respect posted signage, and give forestry crews plenty of space while you’re out there!

Wishing all hunters a safe and successful season from the team at WestFor!

A BIG thank you to the forestry contractors and equipment operators who have worked around the clock on the Long Lake wildfire. Your expertise and dedication have been critical during these challenging circumstances.

We also want to thank the firefighters who’ve come from near and far, and to the many volunteers lending a hand in so many ways. Together, your efforts have made a real difference.

Shoutout to Jeremy Simpson, Owner of Back Country Farm & Forestry (New Germany) and Kevin Eisnor, Owner of Eisnor’s Forestry Ltd. (Mahone Bay) for sharing these photos.

In June, three members of WestFor’s field staff joined contractors and lead machine operators for a high performance logging training day, focused on Ecological Forestry principles.

Hosted by the Canadian Woodlands Forum, this hands-on session explored practical approaches to harvesting that support forest health, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability. Continued learning and collaboration like this help ensure our operations meet the highest standards for ecological stewardship and responsible resource management.
