A fire door drop test is a mandatory annual inspection for rolling and sliding fire doors to ensure they close automatically and correctly in an emergency. The test confirms that the door will contain smoke and fire, protecting occupants and property. The full inspection, which includes the drop test, must be performed by a trained and qualified door systems technician
The test involves triggering the door's emergency closing system, verifying it closes fully at an average speed between 6 and 24 inches per second, and then ensuring it automatically resets correctly for its next use. This procedure is required by standards like NFPA80.
