🌿 Spring Cleaning For Your Trees: How to control Invasive Ivy on your property. 🌿
As the early spring buds awaken, it’s the perfect time to show some love to our trees by saying goodbye to invasive ivy. Let’s dive into why and how you should tackle this task!
Why Remove Invasive Ivy?
Invasive ivy may look charming, but it poses a serious threat to our trees. It competes with them for vital nutrients, water and sunlight. Over time, it can weaken and even kill trees by suffocating them with its dense growth. By removing it now, you’re giving your trees a fighting chance to thrive.
When to Remove Ivy
Early spring is the ideal time to tackle invasive ivy before the new growth of the season begins, making it easier to spot and remove. Plus, with the ground still soft from spring rains, the ivy’s roots are more likely to come loose.
How to Remove Ivy
Assess the area and take a close look at the affected trees, identifing the areas where ivy is climbing and spreading.
Cut the ivy at the base using sharp pruning shears or a knife. This will prevent it from receiving nutrients and eventually cause it to wither and die.
Remove the ivy from trees by carefully peeling the ivy away from the tree trunk, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Take your time to avoid damaging the tree’s bark. Attempt to remove as much of the roots as possible.
Dispose of Ivy: Bag up and dispose of it properly. Do not compost it, as it can re-root and spread.
Monitor for Regrowth: Keep an eye on the trees throughout the growing season for any signs of ivy regrowth and promptly remove it to prevent reinfestation.
Some advice:
Wear gloves and long sleeves to protect your skin from potential irritants like ivy sap.
Once the ivy is gone, consider planting native species around your trees to promote biodiversity and support local wildlife.
