Getting stuck in an elevator can be unsettling, but staying calm and following a few basic steps will help keep you safe.

➡️ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺
Being trapped in an elevator may feel frightening, but in most cases help arrives quickly and the doors will open within a short time. Focus on steady, deep breathing to keep yourself relaxed and in control.

➡️ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺
Most elevators are equipped with an emergency button or phone. Press it to alert building staff or emergency services. If you have a cell phone, you can also call 911. If you can’t reach anyone, try calling out so others nearby can hear you. Avoid hitting or kicking the doors, as this can damage the system and delay assistance.

➡️ 𝗗𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲
Trying to force the doors open or exit through the ceiling hatch is dangerous. The elevator could start moving unexpectedly, putting you at serious risk of injury. The safest place to remain is inside the elevator, which is designed with ventilation and safety features to protect you until help arrives.

Elevator owners are required to have a maintenance program in place for their elevator equipment to ensure it operates safely. If a problem occurs, the elevator must be taken out of service until it has been inspected and cleared for use. Owners are also responsible for reporting any incidents to the appropriate authorities.
