A few key ways to tell if your fence is built well and is going to outlast the harsh Canadian weather.
- Fence boards are always SCREWED never NAILED: Nails are for structure and keeping things strong, screws however, do a much better job of keeping your board fastened to the fence. After a year, all those holes that the nail made will be larger than the nail which will lead to boards popping out like no tomorrow. The ridges on the screws help to prevent that, as they bite into the wood to hold that board where it should be.
- posts are sunk 4’ deep: We do this to keep below the frost line to prevent any heaving of the posts. To achieve this with a 6’ tall fence, the posts need to be a minimum of 10’ long.
- Three cross members: Even though this is a 6’ tall fence, the middle cross member is crucial to prevent the middle of the boards from bowing in or out.
